MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Prop Shaft

1500 76. Just replaced the prop shaft (from Moss), the first one didn't fit - not even the right one. The second appears not to run true or out of balance. Is this normal. What are the implications, and what is the suggested remedy.

Remedy? Take it back.

What was wrong with your original? UJs?

I would rebuild that one, if you still have it.

Agree with Dave what was wrong with your old one?

Secondly how do you know the new one is out of balance? and running out of true?

Why did the original from Moss not fit? too long? too short? wrong end etc?
Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo

I was toying with the idea of making my own propshaft using proper CV joints (tripod joints). This would accomodate loads of movement and be better than some crummy UJs. I reckon it would be pretty easy and only cost about £150 for parts.

That said, I don't have a body to put an engine/axle/prop into yet... ha ha.

Further to Bob's question. The car was raised one side. It apparently runs about 5mm out of true. The fist one that moss gave us was incorrectly labelled, that went back & they gave us a replacement (new)
The chap from moss said 'Thats a good one' (Running 5mm out of true)!!

"The car was raised one side. It apparently runs about 5mm out of true."
sometimes I read posts and think 'am I going nuts? why don't I understand this?'
what does the stance of the car have to do with the propshaft which is effectively 'floating'?
And what runs out of true the car or the shaft, and how/where is the 5mm measured?
David Smith

makes sense if you're less technical - like me
N Atkins

As David S. says, the ride height discrepancy cannot have anything to do with the prop shaft and if the shaft is runnig 5mm out, it must be bent which would give horrendous vibration. In which case, send it back again, but to be honest, I also don't quite get the gist of this post.
