MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Orientation of rear cam bearing

I'm replacing my cam bearings and wanted to know the orientation of the rear one. The photo is of the original (engine has been rebuilt before) but wasn't sure why the slot was where it was. Obviously oil groove but how does the oil get there?
Looking at the back of the pump it has a small pin hole so I'm assuming the oil leaks into the central bit near the shaft and will float around in there and then gets forced into the slot?

So the slot can be anywhere as long as at the back?
