MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Morgan axle hub removal (NMC)

Pardon the off topic post but people here seem very knowledgeable. My neighbour has a Morgan (4 wheeler) and he feels the rear axle bearings are worn and he wants to replace the bearings. The half shafts seem to be like the Peter May Spridget shafts in that they have a keyed tapered joint between the hub and axle and that isn't budging with current attempts to free the joint so would anyone have any advice. Some information on the internet indicated that the hub might need pressing off with a really heavy press so my flypress might be of use, other than that a 3rd party hydraulic press may be needed.

The hardest hub I have removed (to date) was on a 1976 Scimiar... I had the hub puller so tight you could see its distortion, yet 'tapping' with the heaviest persuader in the tool-box had no effect.

So I resorted to the kitchen tool-box in the shape of a kettle... pouring a full kettle of just-boiled water on the hub freed it up... it flew the best part of a yard before landing.

If if comes free without using all the water, you can of course make yourself a deserved Earl Grey.

Anthony,

Thanks for that, my neighbour has just informed me that the application of heat from a propane torch had a similar result in that it came off with a bang a flew a short distance. Seems it still needs a slide hammer or similar to pull the halfshaft out.

I recently had some involvement with a TR engined Plus 4. Front wheel bearings and stub axles. Just for the record (and what Melvyn R or Morgan didn't tell me at the time), there are THREE sizes for front stubs standard on them. The ones for the 4 cyl cars and the ones for the 8's and there's the very RARE one (that this one is), the 'Competition' stub axle which is a cross between the other two....!
I won't get caught with that one again.....!
