Paul Hunt made up a tool for doing this. See it here http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/braketext.htm#eclip

Bend the clip slightly so one end points a little away fron the backplate. Now you should be able to get one end and the center piece under the ridge. Use a screw driver to fit the last end under. Done in 2 minutes My record time for replacing one cylinder including jacking and wheel removal and refitting is about 10 minutes

C-clips provided these days are too small. I broke both last time redoing the rear brakes. Re-use the old ones.

dear all many thanks for the assistance in the end i used a combination of onnos method with the old clip. As suggested the new clip was too thick and would not flex enough to be placed. Many thanks Douglas
