MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Luminition magnatronic ignition

Hya i keep getting pre ignition or over run as some might say , could this be the ignition timing out or is it from running too hot?
I dont have a strobe light , can u set the static timing with these ignition kits. Its a 78 1500 midge

Cheers

James I suggest you fully service the car as per owners Handbook

then leave it with a a garage used to old cars with a cryton(?) tuner machine to set up tappets, timing and carbs mixture in that order, the machine will check ignition for faults (a lot of times faulty plugs and leads) which were missed in the service or hidden

tappets are usually set cold hence the need to leave the car

whilst the electronic ignition is new(ish?) the rest of the dissy is probaly old and worn so these two elements put in a lot more variances to engine set up

the full and proper servicing of the car combined with the tune-up should make a noticable difference to your car

cheers, Nigel

cheers for the reply, is there any where in west mids that could do this for me. what you no off!!! oh and where should the temp gauge be sitting when fully warmed up its sitting just over half way on tick over???
james gibson

there must be loads in West Midlands someone will be able to recommend one (I don't live that way so don't know)

don't know on temp gauge as I have a 1275 and they run 'cool' but remember gauges are just that gagues and might not always be 100% accurate, however with regular use of your car you'll know where your gauges normally sit and if they don't behave or sit where they normally do then is the time to investigate

if your temp gauge sits just over half way when fully warmed up and is steady there then that may well be fine

on a 1500 I think the sender is electric so checking the electric connections and wires are in good condition, clean, secure and protected

if you want I can post my usual new owners advice that covers the cooling system very important for winter and summer running

West Midlands . . . . try Aldon Automotive in Brierley Hill. 01384 572553. Give them a ring. You might want to push the boat out and give the car a rolling road test!
Andy Hock

rolling road set up is a watse of money until you have the car fully properly serviced and maintained and set up pretty much as required

then take it to Peter Burgess in Alfreton for rolling road set up - http://www.mgcars.org.uk/peterburgess/
N Atkins

Aldon are not bad, more than capable of dealing with your car including on their rolling road after it has been set up properly

But my choice of guru (lovely term)

Is Peter Burgess at Alfreton

in the mean time…

Check your rotor arm

check your coil main HT lead with an earth test against the engine

Best use the lead on top of a spark plug tester if you can

or just run the coil lead into a loose spark plug against the block

if it sparks, great

if it doesnt, come back and tell us what you did find
