MG Midget and Sprite Technical - ignition timing
is it possible to check the timing without putting the car on ramps. seen the haynes manual and that shows under the car is that the best way of doing it.
D Sartain
Hi, you can check the ignition timing without putting the car on ramps, you just need to lie on the floor so that you can see the crankshaft pulley...It does make things easier if you lift the car up a little, I have some mini ramps that lift the car up about 6". Alan.

Just put a timing mark on the top of the pulleyand the corresponding place of the cover.

Exactly Onno, it's not rocket science is it!
Mike Howlett
thank you for that comment if you havent got anything to add dont say anything.

Hi, it's possible and you have to get the light angle just right to get sight. I had to lengthen the wires on my strobe light and feed the wires behind the bumper to make it fit. Also a white line, the width of the crank pulley to line up with the timing notch helps a lot. Regards, Tony G.

D. Onno is or WAS your friend....haha...but he is correct. Just aline the mark on the pulley wth the tooth that rep tdc, then make a mark on the pulley at the top where its easily seen while handling the dissy... Then mark the timing cover to alian with the new pulley mark.... And just adjust the timming light to the correct advance measurement...flash and set it.....from up on top They also make timming tape you can apply to the pulley for the old style timming guns that dont have the adjustable advance timing feature Prop

i didnt mean onno. onno added input. thanks onno and sorry if you felt that comment was to you.
D Sartain
I don't see why you have a problem with Mike's comment. Onno told you how to deal with it, and Mike told you it was easy and also gave the idea a X2 in case you had any doubts about the validity of the advise. Charley

Well it didnt add anything and made me feel apit pathetic for asking and im sure other people may feel that way if not then its just me. I have a condtition that does cause me to take things differently to many shall we say normal people. Just thought out of respect you never know how someone can take a comment so mabye think about how it is worded thats all im saying.
D Sartain
Dan, I suffer from the same complaint. I take people at face value too. If someone says something, I believe it. A failing of mine. :) Also, from what I can tell, there are few, if any, "normal" people on here. lol. Maybe just you and me. LOL. This is backed up by a recent post by Guy, who noted that many people on here are barking MAD. :). Quite true I'm sure.
