MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Ignition Kit Powermax 25D

I have just bought and installed the above ignition kit to replace the condenser and points that I was finding less than reliable. Only £28.95 from Simon BBC on ebay and incredibly easy to instal. Does anyone else have experience of this ignition kit and its reliability? So far it is working great - I am wondering whether it would be prudent to buy a "spare" in case it fails.

The price of this kit seemed very low compared to other ignition kits on the market but if it works and is reliable......

Regards.

Tim I'd be interested to know how it performs and lasts, I've got a feeling this subject might have been covered before

Bear in mind just renewing the existing parts for new could have produced an improvement

I know some who swear by points and at electronic igniters

I don't like pionts but do like electronic so I'm not knocking you but electronic can 100% fail sometimes whereas with points you can usualy get home so at that price a back up would seem sensible

but if you have AA/RAC/Green Flag/ect. then it might be cost effective to not buy a second unit unit the first has proved itself

Is this a straight swap for the points Tim? I was looking at these for my car if I ever get it back on the road.

I bought this one for my 1500 with its 45d4 distributer.

Great value, would strongly recommend as worthwhile upgrade, eliminates points bounce and makes the engine much smoother. As for spares it's so quick to fit all I do is carry my old points and condenser as known good spares and will refit them if I ever have to.

As you say the only worry is with electronic modules if they fail they don't always give the same clues before failing as 'points' do and so can suddenly just stop working.

Touch wood, faultless so far.

At that price I'd buy a second and swap it with the one you have already fitted and keep the original as a spare that way you know it's prepared for installation and works (well at least when you took it out, store well in the boot and it should still work when you want it later)

If your dissy is worn you could consider going fully electronic and get a 123 dissy and just risk it

my 123 dissy is already of greater longevity and reliabilty and certainly better performance than the last time I changed points for points

Graeme - yes it was a straight swap for points. Nigel - I think I'll do as you suggest - better safe than sorry and it was a very reasonable price. Thanks.

I've just bought and Accuspark (Watford MG) for around £30. Not fitted it yet but assume it's fine. What's more suprising is the cost of the better known branded ones (around £90). The electronics inside them are not exactly sophisticated! Seems that a couple of manufacturs are now making Hall effect kits much cheaper. Of course, I am saying this with my kit sat on the shelf! However, I think (and hope) that it should be very reliable.

I've been looking at this as well. Did you have to reset the timimg?
P Ottewell

I will have to recheck the timing. The point that the points open varies relies on the cam pushing the points spring. When I fit the accuspark, there will no longer be a spring there, and so it's a huge assumption that the electrickery will break the circuit at the same moment!

So, yes..timing needs checking.

I have fitted a SimonBBC module to my MGB and am very pleased - it definitely ran better. I don't do many miles so can't vouch for reliability but a spare is worth carrying or the original points.
There was some discussion a while ago that the blue modules were no good - the one I have is red
