MG Midget and Sprite Technical - How on earth do you bolt up a Frogeye rear mirror?
Did an archive search expecting to find a huge number of queries from infuriated owners, but nothing. Is it just me? One of the two nuts which hold the rear view mirror above the dash in the centre has vibrated off my IoW Frogeye. No problem. Bought a suitable replacement - but there is no way of getting finger and thumb near the base of the bolt to start screwing it on. You can't see it with a torch. The dash on an IoW is identical to standard, although made out of fibreglass. However there is a little shelf in the fibreglass of the car body which prevents access and which might well not be on original cars. Do I have to take the aluminium trim off and dashboard out just to fit the nut?

I have seen a few cars with the mirror stuck to the windscreen with a rubber suction pad. Maybe that is why?

surely you just pop the nut in a nut-driver with an extension shaft and insert from below

Unfortunately not - you can neither see the base of the bolt nor get directly below it. I tried using a much longer bolt to give easier access, but it fouls on a protrusion about half an inch down. There's a bit of body in the way. As far as I can see, I'm going to have remove the dashboard to do the job properly - or switch to a later type mirror.

I've not had your problem on my '58 Frog (minus 9 stud screen!) but have fitted a drivers side mirror which is very useful. I've attached a pic of it.

I did not have to remove the dashboard, I only had to loosen it a bit Flip

a somewhat longer mirror was helpful when the hardtop was up.

Just had a lok on mine. Can you not just drill a hole through the bracket underneath, and use a longer bolt? Not concours of course but should do the job quite easily it appears
