MG Midget and Sprite Technical - How do I install wire wheel grease caps?

I bought new grease caps for my front wire wheels but not sure how to fit them. Does that thread bolt to anything and why is it so much longer than the orginal? Do I cut it down to a particluar length?Surely it doesn't just rattle around in there?

The cap just pushes in and is retained by friction. The thread is to make it easier to remove.
