MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Fuel surge
On trackdays in long left hand corners the engine goes flat as in fuel starvation, straighten the car up and the engine picks up. It doesn't matter how full the fuel tank is so it's not surge in the tank and the car gets enough fuel flat out in a straight line so the pump is fine. This leaves me to believe that the float chambers are running dry. The car is engine wise unmodified but runs much stiffer front suspension than standard and 1/2 inch up on wheel width, the rear is just lowered. Having taken the float chambers apart and checked all's well I can see how the lightweight floats in a left hand turn may move to shut off the supply by the inertia of the turn (it's a 1500 with the carbs on the right side of the car). Can anyone confirm my thinking is correct and better still offer a solution?

CB - I suspect that you have diagnosed the problem correctly. If I remember correctly, Joe Curto http://www.joecurto.com/ in the US has a special float set up that corrects this problem. Cheers - Dave

On my old race car running SU's the float was altered through 90 degrees to counteract this - a bit of engineering required but worked.

Can you mount the top of the float chamber at 120 degree intervals (if the 3 screws are equi-spaced)? Arrange it so that you would have fuel starvation when braking hard (and not of course using any fuel). A

Thanks, I'll start with the easier cheaper option and work my way up, I'd report back but the next time on track is likely to be next year. I'm quite glad to have the diagnosis confirmed. Regards Chris
