MG Midget and Sprite Technical - fitting new engine / gearbox mounts

hya im getting a horrid vibration rite threw the car under hard exeleration. so can only think its going to need new mounts, iv baught new mounts, but simpley done have the tools to doo the job properly. is there any body on here who could do it. and how much would it cost. im located near birmingham and coventry. but willing to travel a little.

or could it possibly be the propshaft or exhaust. its only done it sincle lowering it and pranging the exhaust of a few speedramps. but when i look under neath it looks like its clearing the body.

any help would be apreciated

cheers james

gearbox mounts is an engine out job, but I'd be very surprised if they are the problem, more likely to be propshaft touching the body where it exits the back of the tunnel. Check it with driver on board...
David Smith

I agree with David - check the propshaft first.

However, if it is not the propshaft and you want to change the engine mounts it is easy-peasy. All you need is a jack, a block of wood to spread the load under the sump and a couple of spanners/sockets (1/2 and 9/16 if I recollect correctly). This is covered in the archives in plenty of posts but anyone on this BB can advise if you can't find those threads.

The propshaft can hit the top of the tunnel on full bounce, more likely with a lowered car. This can bend the shaft, not good for balance!

I replaced the gearbox mounts on my ribcase with units from Peter May. Those from Moss had rubber blocks that were too thin to do the job.
David Cox

Not just Moss but nearly everywhere has both engine and gearbox mounts too thin - I've tried a number of suppliers and got the same thing.

Are Peter May's engine mounts the correct thickness?
Paul Walbran

Dave O'Neill may still have some NOS which presumably are the right size...
David Smith

Paul: Yes; mounts from PM correct thickness and material. No problems.
David Cox

No problems - unless you have a HIF44 carb and then the nice thick 'proper' mounts raise the engine and cause the HIF to hit the bonnet and dent it! Don't ask me how I know!
Chris H (1970 Midget 1275)

I'm sorry to say that my NOS engine mounts have now all gone.
Dave O'Neill 2

I have a pair of Dave's NOS going spare (they are to blame for the dent in my bonnet). I'll accept £10 including postage if anyone is interested.
