MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Drivers door glass - how to seat ?
Hi, The drivers window goes up although, whilst the winder works and the mechanism drops when you attempt to 'open' the window the glass remains up and you have to push it down! I've stripped off the inner and looking at the bottom rail of the winder mechanism there's a rubber seal. The glass is not actually sitting within the seal but on top of it. The seal is so old and brittle that I would think I need to replace it but I'm not sure if you can rip it out (didn't seem to want to budge) or if it comes as per of the bottom rail unit itself and therefore I need to replace the bottom rail, not just the seal? I would guess that I would then force the glass down into the new seal/rail? Do I have this correct. Thanks.

Sorry to say that it is not this simple first remove the window from the door (lossen the 1/4light bolts to make this easy) Then remove the rail from the winder mechanism this is a fiddly job and besure not to scratch te paint when tou remove it up through the window slit in the top of the door. then clean the rail and check if it not to rusty clean the window then order a new seal. fold the seal around the botom of the window push the rail on there for the 1st bit take a brush with Thinner and brush the seal wet then quickly push in the window (thinner temporary shrinks the seal) you might want to use some ratchet straps to be able to use enough force. Now the window should be secure on the rail. And the rotten job of fitting it back to the door begins! all i can say is take your time and be carefull not to get your fingers in the mechanism.

the rubber will be old/perished and the channel is probably corroded they do push together tho. so should separate. lever out the rubber with a flat screwdriver whilst pulling on the rubber. if the rubber tears, it will need replacing. to refit, place the rubber on the glass lubricate the outer rubber with something like dilute screen wash put the metal channel over the rubber and knock on with a rubber mallet

I have been told that soaking the rubber in petrol works well i believe it vulcanizes the rubber and makes it slip into the track easy

How is the rail actually attached to the winder mechanism then? If I need to remove then pass through the top of the door slit (I've already taken out the glass anyway) how is it attached to the mechanism? Cheers.

You also need to unbolt the regulator to enable refitting. The rail slides off the regulator as there are a couple of 'access' slots. You cannot just slide it back on when there is a window in the channel...you need to unbolt the regulator and manoeuvre it. It helps if you have three hands.

Unfortunately just the standard two. Sounds like a nightmare! Wish me luck.
