MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Creeking sound from rear

Hi All

I have a creeking sound coming from the rear of the car when slowing down it seems to disappear when i accelerate. I have tried changine the oil in the Axle any ideas what may be causing this

Stuart Atkinson

Hello, Stuart.

Do you mean when braking, or when coasting down?

-:G:-
Gryf Ketcherside

Hi Gryf

Just coasting but it does not do it for the first 5 miles or so and then it starts to creek and sometimes it sounds like something is running dry. but all oil levels are ok and correct grades for the car

Stuart Atkinson

might it be the rear spring bushes? mine squeak a lot and I can only hear them slowing down, when everything else is quiet..
Rob Armstrong

could it be something like the suspension ?

to me a creek isn't usually a word used to describe the sounds from oiled stuff like engine, g/box, rear axle

more like something that is strapped or secured but is now moving slighly or muck/dust between surfaces

it MAY (or not) be that it takes 5 miles because of things warming up or settling down

just coasting MAY (or not) be because the car is more evenly weight balanced front to rear as your not got the weight forward when braking or back when accelorating (all non-tech terms/definitions here)

do a 6/7 mile return journey to get the noise as you pull up back home, get someone to press/skake on each corner to see

or set up lifting support items and go out again and as quickly (and safely) as possible get the car off the ground to look underneath but you may need someone in the driving seat to replicate the conditions (only if safe to do so)

My rear springs used to squeak/creak because the leafs were dry.I put some little squares of plastic cut from a Halfords oil bottle between the rear ends of some of the leafs and it seemed to help.
JB Anderson

as always it took me so long to post this Rob has beaten me to it - my suspension ocassionly creeks too but intermitently

My Capri used to do it if it went through a very deep puddle

ETA: as per JB - I thought my creeking would go away with the car being wayoiled - it didn't

P.P.S. - check your ear rings, remember the VW advert

is a rear wheel bearing on its way out?

Norm Kerr

Sorry, for "leafs" read "leaves"..I am getting worse..age again...
JB Anderson

Norm beat me to it. Maybe it takes a while for the bearing to warm up to the point when it starts to creak. I've come across it a few times, but usually with front bearings.

Bernie.

Thanks for the help. I think it may be the rear bearing , will change it and see what happens
