MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Crankshaft endfloat
948cc engine. For a while the engine revs have dipped a bit when the clutch pedal is depressed - typical of excessive crank endfloat. I have just dropped the sump and measured the endfloat with a DTI, moving the crank with a lever. I measure 0.006", probably 0.007" if push the lever hard. Is this excessive and will it cause the rev dropping. I have 2 Haynes manuals, a very old one which states 0.003"-0.007" and a newer one which says 0.002"- 0.003" I recall That I have read here in the past that it should be 0.003" but is 0.006" ok albeit potentialy at the top limit? Thanks Les

Hi Les I tend to go 3-4 thou for endfloat. Putting new thrusts in will tell you if it helps the idle speed droppping. See you soon. Peter

Les, I rebuilt my 948 (well, 998 now) with 2-3 thou endfloat on the recommendation of a well-respected local engineering shop. Two years and a thousand miles on I've had no problems. Your present 6-7 thou is definitely too much. dennis

Just removed the thrust washers and measured them, exactly 0.092" which is correct for standard washer according to Moss catalogue. There is a + 0.005" available, but is this total or on each side taking me +0.010" in total? If it is +0.005" total then might possibly get away with it - or is it a bit tight? Incidently, the +0.005" are quite a bit cheaper than the standard which I find odd. Les

Hi Les Less requirement for standard so more expensive? Your best bet is to surface grind a couple of thou off one 005 thrust washer. I would tend to fit the machined 005 to the clutch end, may absorb the movement with less friction? Peter

Les, Why not just replace one shin and leave the other as it is? Guy
