MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Cam comparison
Hi, Piper have emailed me the tech info for my cam, HR270 and I wondered what it is comparable to 276/286/SW5 etc. The tech info is as follows (based on 1.28:1 rockers): Inlet: 37/71 Exhaust: 71/37 Duration: 288° Valve lift: 0.361 (inlet and exhaust) Overlap 74° Thanks Mark

Hi Mark The trouble is it never tells you the shape of the lobe. All you can do is ask what the engine will pull from and too, ask other people what they have used and what they think about it and ask a few people with plenty of experience what you can expect. As a rule of thumb with the 266 range etc....The 266 is milder than an MG Metro cam but hairier than the standard 1275 cam, the 276 is hairier than an MG Metro cam but still well mannered on the road(the HR270 will fall into this category) The 286 is the first 'Monster' cam for 1275s...it flies above 2650 rpm but flat as a f**t below. The BP285 is a little milder than the 286 etc etc etc. Peter

It looks very similar to the Special Tuning profile 544 (pin-drive) 643 (star-drive). Kent refer to it as 'fast road rally'

Thanks both. I did have a look on the Kent website and the figure fell around the 276/286 bracket. I then had a trawl through the archives and ended up more confused as it seems that some cams give their power via extra lift and some via duration etc, hence the post! Thanks Mark
