MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Cam Chain Tensioner Ring
The 948cc and 1098cc A Series engines had a tensioner ring on the drive sprocket for its simplex chain, but its use was abandoned on the later 1275cc engines which used a duplex chain. How did it work? Was abandoning it just a cost-cutting measure, or was it a source of trouble, or what?

AFAIK, the duplex doesn't need it because it's less liable to stretch. I put both duplex and tensioner on my A series, because I had both. Mind, I think my tensioner was like a big metal banana that pushes on the outside of the chain and stops it slapping.

Once the cam gear was modified to include two rows of sprockets, there was no room for the rubber rings unless the gear was widened. Then it wouldn't fit under the timing cover anyway.
