MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Basic electrical advice

I need to splice some new wiring into my wiring loom. The insulation around the wires attached to the dynamo are hard and cracking (heat and old age I presume). What amp rating do I need for the big wire and the small wire (sorry can't be more technical - electrics is not my best subject!).

25A and 5A should do it. A

In the UK we measure wire as cross sectional area such as 1 Sq mm or say 6 sq mm, then we calculate according to certain rules what cross sectional area we need for a particular application

I would use 6 sq mm for the large wire and 1 sq mm for the small wire on the dynamo.

the smaller wire was originally a 28 strand wire (roughly equivalent to a 14 gauge modern wire, capable of carrying 17.5 Amps), and the larger wire was either a 65 strand (capable of carrying 35A, and roughly equivalent to a modern 10 gauge wire), or an 84 (capable of 42A), I don't recall for sure.

The best source in the world for wire, terminals and advice is right there in the UK, Autosparks (they make the harnesses that are sold by Moss, Leacy and etc.)

give them a jingle and I'm sure they can tell you for sure, and set you up with whatever you need.

oops, I just realized you've got a dynamo, and not an alternator, so my advice above might be faulty, wire-size wise. but my recommendation about contacting Autosparks stands!

In fact, here is the page from their website with wire sizes which should help you in spite of me and my dynamo ignorance:

note, "thin wall cable" is modern stuff, "PVC" and "braided" is '70s (and earlier) stuff.
