MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Alternative Tacho

The tacho on my car only works in a vague sort of way. (1500 revs, engine off 3-4000 for most of the rest of the time). The needle's bent and it looks like its touching the face.
Would it be possible to kill two birds, by fitting a later negative earth meter that I've come across (RVI 2430/001) and convert the polarity of the car at the same time. Then I'd have a working tacho and a neg earth car without taking the meter apart?
