MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Adjusting timing

I've just installed an electronic ignition module (Accuspark) in place of badly pitted/burnt points. Now I'm having a problem turning my distributor (Lucas 45D) on my 79 1500 to set the timing. I've loosened off the pinch bolt but the distributor doesn't want to turn. I've checked the clamp is loose ie that there is a little upward/downward play on the clamp. Am I missing something?
Any advice appreciated.

Have you checked to see if the clamp has distorted from being over tightened in the past?

Thanks for the comments - i think I'll have a go at removing the distributor completely.
