MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1275 oil leak update
| making progress towards solving my oil leak. I have dropped the oil pan out. not too hard, although i did find I had to partially remove the starter. It's a "modern" starter and with the way I had to turn it when I put in the datsun transmission, part of the solenoid goes aroung under the edge of the sump. I also had to back out the bottom two bolts holding the timing cover on for the same reason. anyway, everythign looks relatively clean down there. The Oil pan is now clean, thanks to modern conveniences. (good to be a single guy)

part of the bottom of the engine (back end) I couldn't get an angle to get a full picture of the bottom of the engine.

front end. There was a bit of oil clinging to the bottom edge of the front plate, but i couldn't tell if it came from the oil sump side or the timing cover side. so I'll seal this back up and see where I am, oil leak wise.

| Question: What gasket sealant should I use? I have Permatex High temp silicon gasket goo (the red stuff) that I used on all the other seals (heater valve, valve cover, thermostat housing, timing chain cover) is that good for this, or is there something better? |

| Use the common Permatex Blue- you don't need hi-temp stuff and "blue" works just fine. About that oil leak- is your PCV system hooked-up properly and working correctly? The PCV system not working on a 1275 is the most common reason for oil leaks. BillM |

| thanks Bill. Yes, the breather system is hooked up properly. Just following up from my previous thread (August 2, 2010). I just wondered if there was any reason not to use the Red sealant, since I have that and would have to purchase any other kind. |
