MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1275 flywheel on a 1098 10CC ?
| I am about to take my '65 Sprite block, crank, and rods into the Machine shop to be inspected and honed ready to order new bearings, rings, etc. My problem is I don't have a flywheel. Has anyone attempted to fit a 1275 flywheel to a 1098 10CC? I know of a '68 spriget flywheel with clutch assembly that I can get cheap, but if the remachining is too involved I might as well just search around for an original. I'm just trying to restore the Sprite to a reliable summertime driver, not concourse. Thanks Bob ( 2 years into rebuild ) |

| Bob, I think the crank end locations are different, it may be easier to get a flywheel made. I spoke to Nick Swift a while ago about this and he MAY have options for you. http://www.swiftune.com/ Mark. |

| Yes, they are different - 6 bolt for the 1275, 4 bolt for the 10CC. IIRC the 10CC and 10CG had the same flywheel fitment (but it is some years ago that I delved into this! It may be worth checking other 1098 A series applications (Minors etc) to see if this is the case as the 1.75" main bearing variant was much more common, may be cheaper than getting a flywheel made. |

| Thanks all. Looks like the easiest is get an original 10CC flywheel. I will try to track down what setup they used on Morris and others that used the 1098. | 10CG and 10CC flywheel bosses are different sizes and are not interchangable..... Sorry Paul... (silly me) didn't take bolt patten into concideration.... Mark. |

| Hello Paul, Here is a picture of the end of the 10CC crank I have: 3.5 inch outside flange diameter with 4 bolts on 2.75 in bolt circle dia. regards Bob

| have you tried contacting fredinza...they make aluminum flywheels, there not popular here on the BBS as they draw alot of critisim...but I like the therory behind them...only driven mine about 15 miles so cant say anything good or bad, other then its super EASY to stall the engine at low revs. I know this fly is widely avialable for the 1275 and the 948, and Im fairly certian for the 1098, perhaps the same one. Since the Fidanza flywheel is so much lighter there is much less stress on the main bearings.>> Using a lighter weight flywheel than standard can adversely effect other parts of the engine such as the valve train and anything else driven off the crank due to the greater cyclical variation in RPM resulting from the lower flywheel inertia. |

But all kidding and fun aside, David does make a good engineering point, perhaps you should stay with the orginal Non-modified flywheel that is meant for the engine Prop. But that would just be to boring |

| It sounds like the logical way to go is to make up a new "high-inertia" flywheel from 4in. plate with lead around the rim. Of course I'd probably need a starter from a big Cummins diesel to get it to turn over (HA Ha) - and two extra batteries to get the 24Volts.
