MG Midget and Sprite General - WIRING !!! Gez, I didt know that, did you?

Thank god this day over, LOL

Guess What I learned today?

You cant buy multi-colored wire anymore (green with a purple strip, yellow with a red strip, solid purple wire, solid light blue wire ect ect.)... appeartly thats all illeagal to sell to the general public,,,So you can only buy Red, Black, green, Blue, Yellow, brown and white...all in solid colors. thats it nothing else

So I came up with a new Idea... Ill just get some of that colored electrical heat shrink and make my own multi-colored wires....And you now what? I only found one small package that had the sizes I needed... vary few places have the colored heat shrink in sizes less then 1/2 inch in dia.

Guess what else I learned???

Wire is EXPENSIVE... Good Lord! Its between $7 and $12 for 15 feet pending where you go and the quality of the wire...Whats up with that?

Anyway Im beat, wnet to around 14 differant stores looking for what I was needing... managed to piece it all togather, But I have to tell ya, you know what would be a great business... and electronics store! like what radio shack used to be years ago.

I (think???) I know were I can get long strips of the electrical heat shrink in the smaller dia. sizes I need.. But there only open during bankers hours so I wont have the gauge consel installed this weekend, maybe next weekend.
Prop

Oh, I also learn-ed ... those little packages that have 3 pieces about 3 inches long Of the heat shrink tape... and the rest you can use on sewer pipes (cause there so huge in dia) hhahaha... Yeah If you can find it, its UBER expenisve also around $3 to $7 a pack.

BTW.. My 10 gauge radio concel box turned out NICE... Ill post some pics later.

It seems everyone is goig to this cheap color electrical tape... and the heat srink is all going to black...still not much of even that.
Prop

Illegal? I can understand why.. dangerous those wires, dangerous like drugs or guns. I mean if you had a set of multi coloured wires they could kill you, if not you would at least be able to make all sorts of other dangerous things out of them that you just can't with single coloured ones now could you.. (!?) LOL

You can certainly get many of the twin-coloured cables over here from Vehicle Wiring Products http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/VWP-onlinestore/cable/standardcable.php

If you open one of the drop-down boxes that says Black, and scroll down, you will find lots of combinations.
Mike Howlett

mike,

thats not bad... and good pricing also... and in thin wall... If I had more time and knew of the issues I would be facing Id certianly have gone that direction... With shipping, customes ect ect Fees.. it would be about the same price

Alexander

You and I are sharing the same humor... i was thinking almost the same thing... Here you can drive with a rotted out frame, no bonnet, A huge breamer bull in your front seat... YET god forbid you have a pin hole exhauste leak or a wire with more then one color...LOL.

But something to know for next time.

And here I thought getting the wiring was going to b e the easy part...10 gauges and a bunch of switches, I figured Ill just get lots of differant colors of wire in differant color combinations so theres no confusion... Yeah if it were 1984 LOL

gee thanks mr. congressman... Im so glad you care about my cars safty, Im going to remember your name come election time. HAHAha
Prop

Prop,

Did you try British Wiring? And who told you that it is illegal to sell to the public? probably just didn't want to say they didn't know where to get it. Look up Newark Electronics- they at least have green w/ yellow.

As far as wire being expesive, why do you thnk so many people go out and swipe i from construction sites and abandoned houses?
Tim Michnay

well Ive spent about 1/2 hour on google ... and I can only find addittional colors in pink, orange and purple... nothing in a color combo of 2 or more colors...now thats just crazy

So you can only buy colors in

red, black, brown, yellow, green, white, blue.... pink, orange, and purple. it wouldnt be so bad if these colors where in 3 stages like light, normal, and dark colors.

Which thats enough for what I want to do....But still it took me most of the day and 1/2 tank of gas driving from store to store to get red, black, blue, green, and yellow...luckly ive got a small amount of white and brown that im hoping to modify with the heat shrink... spaced out every 6 inches or so

Hey Tim,

I didnt do any research, Pre-looking around or even gave wire color a 2nd thought! I just assumed I could go to any place that had a good supply of wire and get what I wanted...

I asked a hot rod guy Ive known at oriellys (5th location) why I was having a hard difficulty finding wire i wanted... he said they cant sell multi colored wire to the general pulic... some kind of national regulation... they cant even special order it unless its part of a kit like Painless

Im Not sure what credintails you have to have to not be considard "general public" .... I should have asked.

Prop

Heres a thought...

Perhaps go to a salvage yard and find an old LARGE car and rip out the wiring harness...

Anyone have pros and cons for that brain fart of an idea?

yeah, its goong to be hacked up, its going to be old, and its going to be time consumming... maye Ill stay with the orginal plan and just do the new wire with colored heat shrink spaced out ever 6 inches or so for my own color coding

I dont know... its just a B.S. oddity issue...

Welcome to my world ... Hahaha

Thanks Tim,

I certianly will next time.

But Ol Punxsutawney Phil saw no shadow the other day and If no shadow for Phil, Well That means It will be an early spring According to folklore. So im shooting to have my 10 gauge consel installed, wired up, bug free and calibrated before feb 18th for the polar bear run in st. louis.. so time is not on my side

but i am tempted to go that path you provided with the multicolored wire... but then agian, I just spent a fortune on wire... and theres only 13 days left till the polar bear run and I still got to get another 300 to 400 miles on the clock before I do the polar bear run... not to mention I got antsy and pulled the old radio consel yesterday that had my water temp, oil pressure, and volts gauges installed in it... so I cant drive till I get the new one in and at least a basic hook up

yeah... i screwed up, but Ill make it work

Got only one jault before I figured it out :)

Friend of mine bought a Cobra kit car once... The whole thing was wired with white wire. Worked great until it didn't.
