MG Midget and Sprite General - Where to buy grey cockpit moulding?

Does anyone know where I can buy a grey cockpit moulding from? part no. AHA8058. Moss don't sell it and neither do the others I've tried.
Greg H

I think a rattle can would be your best bet, assuming you have the original part?
Graham.

I did have it but I binned it thinking I'll buy a new one. Yes I know, I should have waited until I had the new one but for such a simple part I wrongly assumed it would be easy to replace it. Surely I'm not the only person who's ever tried to replace it.
Greg H

Do you mean the alloy & foam strip along the top of the dash? I was in a similar situation when searching for door mouldings, nowhere makes or sells them either.
Your best bet is to post on classifieds, search eBay etc.

Moss list a price for the black version, AHA9167, add a rattle can and you're good to go!

Actually, looking at this AHA9167, on sussex classic car parts, it seems to be a soft rubber moulding.

But the stuff I think you mean is a flexible plastic. Is that right? The platic mould that runs around the rear under the soft top, held at each end with a chrome clip?

If so, and this might sound off the wall, you could try flattening a length of grey plastic pvc water pipe and cut a slot along it.

Lawrence Slater

Yes the flexible plastic strip that runs around the rear of the cockpit. PVC pipe? Of the wall? Do they have walls on Mars? because that idea is heading there at very high speed!!!! but thanks for thinking outside the box.

The black one is a rubber section so no doubt made for a lot of other uses but the grey strip was moulded so a special Midget bit which is why for the small volume of sales they probably don't reproduce it. They all seem to sell the black ones but I WANT GREY! I know I sound like a spoilt child but that's what I want.

Graham how well does paint stick to rubber? I have my doubts and suspect it wouldn't take long to start flaking off. Unless you've seen it done? Although I'm sure it would have stuck ok to my plastic one. :(

Perhaps I'll have to chase up a second hand one to replace the secondhand one I through out.

Greg, they've got martians, and I assume they live in houses with walls, lol.

Seriously though, I've seen something like that plastic strip used for something else. Anything similar that has to protect a metal edge. You might try googling moulding companies.

I could get you the dimensions of the original tomorrow if you can't get them anywhere else.

Another idea, is if someone on the BBS is breaking a late spridget and would send you the moulding.
Lawrence Slater

It would need to be an early 1275 to get a grey one.
Dave O'Neill2

and doesn't grey look just super :)

Greg H

It looks great, why on earth did you want to change it?
Lawrence Slater

Lawrence, post #3
"I did have it but I binned it thinking I'll buy a new one."
do keep up! ;-)

Cumulus grey is what you are after and with a plastic primer it should work
Onno Könemann

That's not my car, I wish! It's just a pic I found on the internet. A beautifully restored Midget that some lucky sole is cruising around the UK in.

Greg H

same model as mine, except mine has the chrome mouldings and bonnet spear.

Greg H

that one looks new so I thought it may be available somewhere but I have to repaint the frames so if I can't find a new one as a last resort I could paint a black one.
Greg H

I know I've seen this stuff somewhere else for a different purpose. I'd be very surprised that BMC invented it just for the spridget.
Lawrence Slater

Greg,
Try emailing these people. They do the the stuff, but the product they sell is too small. However they might know of a supplier that does stock the size needed for the Spriodget.

Beware though, they come from Mars. lol.
Lawrence Slater

Greg, not sure about rubber, but on plastic it's fine if you use the appropriate primer,
