MG Midget and Sprite General - Where is everyone?
Been out for a couple of hours around the Derbyshire countryside today and I have not seen another MG. I usually pass a BGT or something coming the other way. Has everybody begun to hibernate?
P Ottewell
Yes, we're all in here
Dave O'Neill2
Every ones out down south, it's like a summers day here. If it's like this again tomoz, then it's down the coast again.
Lawrence Slater
I've just been out for a quick blurt, but only around urban Stockport. But a blurt is a blurt. Bernie.
b higginson
Went to work this morning in the ol' Frogeye. Guess you missed me. ;-)
Martin Washington
I was out early this morning in the mist and came home around 12.00 in glorious sunshine. Then spent a welcome 2 hours tinkering with interior light switches, heater switch. going to check the rear wheels for lumps tomorrow and then play with the idle timing and vacuum advance on the 123 tune. Best get an early night then but I have just opened a bottle of Abbot ale! Dave
Dave Brown
Just had my first mouthful, wonderful. Dave
Dave Brown
We all like a picture.

Dave Brown
best out of the barrel the Abbot Reserve that they served on the GK bar at the GBBF was something special, one pint and my eyes were in orbit my neighbour got me a bottle of Abbot Reserve not bad but nothing like that special barrel GK served up and I got it with complimentary tickets too, well GK make enough money I used to like Abbot on gravity . . . but it's not the same now, when it's good it is good but difficult to find it good and still not as good as it used to be . . . in the old days it was better . . . when I was a young girl it was all fields around here . . . much has changed :)
N Atkins
Nothing bests the taste of Burton Beer Draght Bass or Marston's Pedigree, But then being a Burton lad I'm a bit biased.
P Ottewell
I always plump for Adnams Bitter pulled off the tap on the wall in the Swan at Hoxne. Utter beery perfection. Not their "go anywhere in the country" Broadside which is fair, but not a patch on the real local beer for Suffolk. A "good" pint of Bass is a fair substitute But only in some pubs. ;)
Bill 1 :)
Pete, perhaps 30 years ago that was true but I don’t think so now, having said that I don’t think I was ever a Bass fan but back then Pedi was one of my favourite beers best Bass I’ve had, although something was added I’m sure, was last year at ‘Bessie’s’, Dyffyn Arms, Pontfaen in the lovely Gwaun Valley, Wales although my mate texted (to my wife) last weekend that they were having great Bass in the Star, Bath perhaps my tastes have changed over 30 years and perhaps it’s all the new good micro-breweries – though many new micros sell dreadful beer Bill, we've beer-toured Suffolk and Norfolk a few weekends over the years and stopped overnight in Southwold once, saw the dray horse create its own lake once too when we called in at the King’s Head (Low House) Laxfield once and asked for the then new beer Regatta and the landlord said he didn’t keep it as it didn’t travel – the pub’s 15 miles from the brewery :) when I used to drink Pedi I didn’t like Adnams but after our first weekend out that way I got the taste of it and have never looked back
N Atkins
Neil it's down to personal taste I suppose, I live in Burton on Trent so Bass and Pedi at it's best as it hasn't travelled. I agree there has been a renascence for cask conditioned ales and I always the first to try guest ales from where ever. There was a festival at the Unicorn in Newton Soleney in the summer with 50 plus beers just from Staffordshire. I think that it is great that we have so much choice these days, long may it last.
P Ottewell
Nowt wrong with a few london beers either. Youngs, Fullers. Sussex beer aint bad either. Harveys is pretty good. Truth be told though, British beer is good all over. Even good old Guiness has it's roots in England (porter). So raise a glass to british beer, the best in the world, ---- bar none. :)
Lawrence Slater
I'll drink to that!
P Ottewell
So the answer to the question in the original post is drinking real British ale, second only to driving a real British car!
Dave Brown
or combine the two with a run to one of the county's fabulous pubs - missed out this weekend as my wife was working both days Lawrence Yongs is now owned by Charles Well of Bedford - Wells & Young, unless Wells has sold it on recently I used to drink Fuller's ESB at one time, 23 mile trip on a Friday night to the only pub that sold it in the county, bit of a bikers pub so Born to be Wild on the 'box that would get stuck and who ever was passing the 'box would have to nudge it on that record to get on to the next even then, early '80s, the coin mech was well out of date with 6 plays for 50p? or was it 10p?
Nigel Atkins
Bernie, Where abouts in Stockport are you, I'm not too far from you. Ian
I Ball
I live in melbourne , south derbyshire and i drive my midget to work and back every day (in derby) . I have to say that its VERY rare that i see another old style mg let alone a midget !
D Stratton
Well I was out in the Frogeye over the weekend London to Cheltenham friday night Cheltenham to the Midlands and back on Saturday Cheltenham back to London on Sunday Probably about 300 miles or so. That's why I wasn't on here. No beer was drunk by me.
Gary & Gaps
Dave, I work in Derby too (RR) I think I've spotted you on Victory Road, I don't use mine as a daily but I do take it to work from time to time. I drove her through Melbourne on Saturday.
P Ottewell
As Gary I too was out and about. Devon to Brierley Hill Friday and then back Saterday but it was up and down the M5. 350 miles on the clock so as Nigel would say - time for a full service again!!!!!!!!!!!!lol Dave
Dave Price
300 miles on Saturday from home at 6:30am Birmingham by 9:00am set off home around 5pm and nicely home by 7:30pm So great day from 9 till 5 (was that a song?)
Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo
Bob, try the other thread if you want to talk music lol..
P Ottewell
Nigel just noticed I called you Neil, silly old fool lol.
P Ottewell
>>Nigel just noticed I called you Neil, silly old fool lol.<< me or you actually another reason I changed my Username, I'm almost sure I changed it before but the computer switched it back or it might be me being a silly old fool I done 300+miles previous weekend plus taking some out for rides including a 'Contributor' to Classic Car Weekly that was supposed to be experiencing the rides but was a lot more interested in Spridgets as he was thinking of getting one - so if you see an article please let me know as I want to see if he prints my advice - you can guess what it was :)
Nigel Atkins
Yes i usually do go home via victory rd so you may well have spotted me ! Out of interest were you driving in your midget near to the crewe and harper over the weekend ? My wife told me that she saw a chrome bumber midget the same colour as mine near to swarkestone bridge either friday or sat but she cant remember which day
D Stratton
Sheena Easton Robert.
Lawrence Slater
Ian Ball. I'm in Offerton, Stockport. Just off Hall Street. Drop me an email if you want to meet up. Talking of beer, Robinson's Unicorn best bitter takes some beating when it's on form. 4.2% alcohol by volume. Luckily, I don't need to drive to get some, loads of Robbies pubs in Stockport, easy walking distance. Bernie.
b higginson
Dave yes that was probably me by the Crewe and Harper on Saturday, I went along the Swarkestone bridge before turning towards Ticknall and Melbourne.
P Ottewell
9 to 5, Dolly Parton surely
Nigel Atkins
Sheena first though! Nice pub the Crewe and Harper, funny how this thread keeps finding its natural common denomitator isn't it?
Bill1
oh, trivia, 9 to 5 two songs, same title in UK (had to look that up as I couldn't remember the Sheena Easton song Dolly wrote her's for the film the Sheena Easton one I only really know from the version on Not the 9 O'clock News I'm not so good on Derbyshire pubs as I don't think we've toured there
Nigel Atkins
SS&NB MASC met up with the Notts & Derby group there a few years back, also met them at another fine pub over looking the Trent I think (It was dark when we came out so I can't remember quite which one it was) And they have a nice regular pub too, lucky chaps and chappesses. Sheena's song came out first but was soon overshadowed by Dolly's coming out as the film tie up was mainstreamed within a couple of weeks of SE's song hitting the telly I remember it well
Bill1
Yup sheena first, but Dolly had bigger tits :)
Lawrence Slater
Trust you Lawrence.....
P Ottewell
but so true :)
Bill1
Did you mean bigger hits?
P Ottewell
Those too Peter, those too. :)
Lawrence Slater
Oi! you lot! get on Prop's thread with the music already! Bernie.
b higginson
Point taken Bernie
P Ottewell
Who's out where this weekend?
P Ottewell
been all the way to Bosworth field today 2 and a quarter hour round trip. Didn't see anybody else out and about again, was I the only MG owner in Staffs, South Derbyshire and Leicestershire enjoying the sunshine again.
P Ottewell
lol. I think it's all a myth. There are no other sprite owners except me. I haven't passed one on the road for years. In fact, if I hadn't visited a kent pub a few months ago, and hadn't seen with my own eyes several spridgets, -- Alan anstead group -- I really would believe I'm the only surviving owner, and all here on the bbs are ghosts. :)
Lawrence Slater
Out today, only for a short run 100 miles, Messingham to North Somercotes, didnt see another pre 70's car although we were followed for some time by an old guy on a BSA Bantam! http://lincstrust.org.uk/reserves/nr/reserve.php?mapref=15
Rob Flint
Stuck in a stupid traffic jam trying to get out of a car park - coz some of us have to use our Midgets (and Bs) for everyday transport - not galavanting around! Also took it to the final presentation of the Midget50 cheque to the Air Ambulance on Friday and got stuck in traffic then too. I've been forbidden from whinging about the traffic today though, so thought I'd join this thread just to have somewhere to moan - stupid Christmas/stupid traffic/stupid traffic jams/stupid shoppers ....
rachmacb
I'm with you Rach bah humbug. During the summer though I usually pass another MG either a BGT or a Midget, I've see no one for weeks..
P Ottewell
I've been wrecking my F. Broken the scuttle panel and the windscreen in one weekend, not to mention several nails. Decided not to go near the Midget in case I was jinxed!
Ally
So pleased mine has now been liberated from my ex wife! there for using arnt they? cant think of anything better than Boxing day or new years day blast to the coast with the lid down..... bacon buttie then back home for some real fun.............. scrabble of course......
Rob Flint
But it's not even December yet. Why must there be so much xmas activity already? Bags full of humbug. Last 5 out of 7 years, I've managed to be in the pacific rim, and dodged xmas altogether. Closest I'm getting to water this year sadly, is Bewl water kent. LOL.
Lawrence Slater
Out yesterday for an 80 mile round trip and met up with a Triumph Herald here. http://g.co/maps/7hf3j
I Ball
Lawrence. Bewl Water is partly in Sussex. In late summer you will lose count of the Midges to be found there. Occasionally, if you camoflague carefully you will even spot Flamusredicus. If you don't see it you will probably here it. |
Gavin Rowles
Well as long as it doesn't bump into my olengicuswhiticus spriticus we'll be ok. :)
Lawrence Slater
Someone's been watching too many Harry Potter films
P Ottewell
And someone can't spiel. |
Gavin Rowles
I've never seen a Harry Potter film. I'm more influenced by Spart(i)cus lol.
Lawrence Slater
<Yes i usually do go home via victory rd so you may well have spotted me ! > Dave I think I spotted you again today at about 12:45 on Victory Road. If it was, you go home early!
P Ottewell
