MG Midget and Sprite General - Vinyl hood mould

Anyone know a good product to remove mould from the underside of a vinyl hood.

fairy liquid and a scrubbing brush?

sorry maybe should of also added giving it protection or to try and stop it comming back quick if such a thing exists.

I'd have thought any household mould cleaning product subject to it being for plastics too

as for stopping it coming back you need to consider what caused it in the first place

thoughts:

could it be from condensation

from where or how it's stored or parked, possibly the position or place

wet inside car

Almost certainly caused by condensation.

Mold can be killed by strong white vinegar. I've used it myself inside my house, prior to re-papering a wall that got damp and a bad case of black mold.

Scrub it clean and you will get rid of the mold on the surface. But the fine scratches and stiching will contain spores. So soak it with white vinegar after cleaning it. Wipe it over from time to time.

You could also use Tea tree oil, but that's expensive compared to white vinegar.

Thanks for the comments both me and my dad wasnt sure if they were too harsh as many of them are for bathrooms and so on.

As for where the car is sadly not much we can do about it. On the drive with a cover on it. but was there all last year aswell and didnt happen.

thanks for the comments.

different weather conditions last year

sounds like the cover needs a vent to allow some air in

if you're using something other than a proper car cover then that might be false economy - plenty of threads about car covers

(if possible) moving the car slightly so that it's in or out of full shade or sun or moving to a wind corridor might help

might just be in your cabin but best to check your engine bay and boot for condensation and the start of surface rust
Nigel Atkins

Car covers in damp conditions are not a good idea! Sounds like the cover is preventing it from "breathing" such that hood underside is continually damp and growing mould. At the very least the cover should be removed frequently on dry breezy days. Better is to only put the cover on in order to keep frost of the windscreen, and then to drive it every day.

Its apparently a breathable cover and i bloody hope so cos of the price last year just under £100 I think.
Maybe abit stupid price but she is my baby and was new to having a classic. it is just the hood though.

Well apart from micro blistering on passenger door and wing which seems to of come back or reappeared to me.
D Sartain

if you've got a breathable cover on perhaps you could leave the window down just a little

£100 isn't cheap but it's not over the top sort of mid-range
Nigel Atkins

True but without trying to upset anyone it is only a sprite then again how many e types or old ferrari's are on peoples drives with a cover on not many im guessing.
D Sartain

with the weather so mild (well here anyway) why not drive the car, you've no SORN worries either

personally I'd sooner have a Spridget rather than an E-Type or Fezza, of course I wish I ownded either then I could sell it and get possibly a tip top Spridget or two and my wife could get her 20 year wait kitchen extention
