MG Midget and Sprite General - Value of Mk1 Midget?

I have a friend who has a Mk1 Midget which he has owned for some 30 years plus. It has been off the road for two years but up until that time was MOT'd every year. I'll heath prevented him using it. It would not require much to get it MOT'd. Any idea of a ball park figure as to value? It has an interesting 6 digit number plate too. Thanks.

MOT realy does not say that mutch...
picures and a good discription is the only way to make a good guestimate

is it UK-registered? did you mean 6 characters?
David Smith

Yes David, it was registered in GB. The reg has three letters and three numbers.

if the reg is that good he might want to consider selling that seperately but don't expect to necessarily get 100% of what some say it's worth or expect to sell it quickly, I got an enquiry a year after I'd sold a reg (I prefered it went with the car which it did but I could have got more holding it and selling it later)

I not in favour of splitting a car from it's original reg number unless the number will be lost due to scrapping of the vehicle.
Continuaty of history (inc numbers), in my mind, adds to the overall appeal of a vehicle and thus, ultimatly it's value.
As for the value of the Mk1 Midget, I'm seeing prices now getting close to that of the Mk1 Sprites.

It's the old Cooper S, Cooper and now Super Delux scenario again...

good photos are a good start but such as my profile photo it makes the paint look better than it is by it can't show how well the car goes

loads of history, bills, servicing information helps as does having a good paint and interior colours and whatever else is fashionable at this moment

if it's a really good car then looking to sell abroad is a good idea as they seem very happy to pay what are good prices and give less hasle than in this country - not to say what's worth what that's up to the actual buyer to decide

unfortunately cosmestic condition is King how it runs is a very low secondary consideration on higher value cars
N Atkins

I agree with Mark the original number enhances the value of the car and ought to be kept with the vehicle.

I also think MK1 Midgets are getting few and far between, not particularly my cup of tea but many people are wanting such cars. Unlike the frogeye the MK1 Midget is valuable as a standard car and would not do well I feel if it were modified whereas a Frogeye is just as valuable as standard if it has been converted to some kind of replica or indeed performance modified all ar sought after.

Value? no idea? :)

I am with Nigel on this one
The pound is cheap and MG's are cheaper in the UK than on the mainland.
That makes selling to a european very attractive.
The original plate is of no intrest to a european buyer so could be sold too.

But is making the most money on these cars what we want?
Should we not rather sell to a buyer who will use rather than one that will just put it in his garage....
Onno Könemann

I'm all for owners using their classics as much as possible as I always bang on about it

it's not just the money it's the hassle, let downs, (rudeness/impoliteness) that you get with British buyers as well - most expect show car standards for low purchase prices, most will not have the first clue how the car should drive but will be experts on that noisey first gear

if the car is a very good one an overseas buyer will phone with questions expect paperwork to back everything up but if happy will pay full asking price turn up with a trailer or by taxi to drive your former car away and if you ever hear from them again it probably wont be a complaint but query or even compliment

people trade-in to dealers for lower prices average cars over here to rightly avoid the hassle
