MG Midget and Sprite General - Track Day at Donington - more bookings required
Just in case anyone is interested, MGCC's MGs on Track have some untaken places at Donington and are looking for late bookings to make up the numbers. It is on Monday 10th October (i.e. next week!) and will use the full Grand Prix circuit. They are being fairly flexible about the cars they will accept i.e. non-MGs provided they are 'compatible' (I presume that mean no Class-C racers or F1 cars). Details and bookings can be obtained via their website www.mgs-on-track.com. I have no vested interest in MGs on Track other than that I am going on the 10th. Chris

I know that it's a cost/availability issue, but for many of us, weekdays are just not an option, otherwise I'd be there.

I would love to go but for me it would be a 468 miles round trip using some 12 gallons of petrol which would equal approx £70 in fuel. Plus £145 for the track day plus £10 for a helmet plus the fuel around the track. Oh yeah plus an overnight stay and two days off work. When I did the Stowe evening I loved it. I was on holiday that week and was kindly offered a bed for the night. But to be realistic, I agree with Gary, weekdays are tough for those of us still working. Also with the cost of living nowadays, you have to cut your cloth. Shame.

Gary, Neil I agree with you both. Before I became self-employed I wanted to do a track day but was never able to take the time off from work. I also only considered track days at circuits that were within commuting distance for the reasons that Neil mentioned (distance, petrol and accommodation costs etc.). It is also an expensive day out but I hope it turns out to be worth it. I fear that track days like this may decline if there is no effective (i.e. backed by money) demand for it. Lets hope there is an opportunity to do a track day on a weekend and for less money. Chris

Before Dave Livingstone and his friends started MGs on track a couple of us in the MG Car Club organised a few trackdays I was one of them and organised 3 days at Cadwell, my local circuit. MGs on track took over that mantle within our club and have done a marvelous job expanding the interest so that a trackday is happening all over the UK for us throughout the year. However circuit hire is not cheap and even with the huge leverage the MGCC can apply fees are still high. One way of trying to reduce costs is to have trackdays during the week, this can effectively reduce the cost by about half, but it does cause an inconvenience to those of us who have to work. :( When we made those same decisions many years ago I remember us saying that hopefully people would book a days holiday to enter. It is a difficult balancing act.

most decent companies give 5 or 6 weeks' holiday so do you all have to take it in whole weeks? I take around 50% of mine in odd days and long weekends so I can work on the car or visit suppliers or go testing or racing...

5 or 6 weeks holiday in my dreams. Four weeks at most for me and two weeks of that are over the Christmas period. However I'm not complaining as I have a job which I enjoy and really isn't that hard.

"Before I became self-employed I wanted to do a track day but was never able to take the time off from work." Chris, dont tell me now your self employed you have more time off and more money? Thats one of the fairytales about being self employed... ;) Your always short on time and that gets wurse the more staf you have. And the money... calculating the amount of hours put in you realy dont make that much in a hour and then you find out you dont even have time to spend it... Not complaining at all but being self employed isnt all that wonderfull as some may think. LOL

| Arie At least I now have a good boss! You are right, of course, that being self employed means that you are at your clients 'beck and call' and it does mean a lot of hours (probably twice as many as I get paid for) but at least I have a little flexibility with when I work. Having to pay my income tax in one lump sum is a shocker after years of PAYE. It make you realise how much tax you are paying when it is not deducted by your employer out of each months salary. | Chris if your paying any tax your doing o.k. although I have found a good accountant will help you pay a lot less. Might see you at Donny, trying to sort things out for time off. Rob. |
