MG Midget and Sprite General - Towing
Is it legal to tow a car with no MOT, insurance, road tax etc with an A-frame? The car is a debumpered 1500 with no interior, no brakes and a non-running engine. So it should be under the 750kg unbraked trailer requirement. I have rebuilt the front and rear suspension with new/uprated components so it's sound in that respect. There seems to be a lot of conflicting advice on this and I was wondering whether anyone had any experience? The car would be towed behind a van or large saloon with safety cables and not on motorways.

Using a lighting board and number plate it should "just" be a trailer that looks like a car if you use an A-frame or a towing dolly. As long as the towing vehicle complies with normal road legislation, weights, insurance etcetera I don't think you will have a problem. But Have you asked a local policeman? Or at your local traffic office? Far better in honesty than relying on an internet "guess", years ago my answer would have been correct but the regulations do change as the rulebooks get re-written. For nigh on thirty years my job was towing if unrepairable so we needed to know the regs, but that's been a while ago now... Probably only need a quick phone call to your local office

Direct.gov says... Towing a car using an A-frame or dolly If you attach an A-frame to a car in order to tow it with a larger vehicle, the car plus A-frame counts as a trailer. If you use a dolly to tow a broken-down vehicle, the dolly counts as a trailer. In both cases the usual safety regulations for trailers apply.
