MG Midget and Sprite General - Tom & Ray 10 Most (NMC)

Tom & Ray Magliozzi, National Public Radio (USA)(Click & Clack the Tappet Brothers) have compiled a list of the 10 most annoying things 'other' drivers do. Anything you recognize here?

good list :)

Though they've forgotten leaving the foglights on 24/7 and driving irritatingly slowly :)
Rob Armstrong

Oh - I heard them driving through Minnesota on a Saturday afternoon - they had me in giggles the whole time, I really thought I was going to have to stop to listen - or change station!!!!

My biggest irritation in other drivers is going fast on straights then braking for corners - especially then speeding up as I'm overtaking ....!!!!

However, I try and balance this with there being things about my driving that other people would get irritated by - my overuse of the horn probably being high up - the new Midget doesn't have one, and it's driving me insane!!!!!
rachmacb

Rachel, you would hate me - I never use the horn between one MOT and the next! I never even remember it is there. In an "emergency" I am too busy taking evading action to think about how to operate the horn! And if someone does toot their horn at me I just think "what an idiot"

My main gripe is the driver who travels at a constant 45mph regardless of the road. There is a route I take to Edinburgh which is a lovely twisty road to drive, but goes through a series of villages with 30 limits. The number of drivers who dawdle along at 45 on the open stretches and then catch up onto your rear bumper as you drive carefully through the villages is really annoying!

Ohh, and M-way middle lane drivers!
Guy

LOL no - as I said, it's one of my bad habits! There was one time I was driving the MGA when the 4x4 who tried to run over me on a roundabout learnt what I thought of him without a horn though ...!!!! Sometimes it's important to remember there's no roof <grin in shame - NOT!>!

I know what you mean about that road though - but then, I've made it from Carlisle to Selkirk in 43 minutes before as, if you know the over-taking places ... ;)
rachmacb

Ah, the use of the horn.

Like Guy, I haven't used the horn from one MOT to the next. In modern motoring the horn is no longer an instrument to warn others of your approach but a useful tool in the armoury of abuse, along with the raised middle finger (or in Germany, tapping the forehead with the forefinger while shouting "idioooot")

Years ago when a horn was serving a useful purpose, it was customary to give a polite toot as you overtook some old black family saloon as it staggered it's way to the seaside, just to make them aware of your presence.

Anyway, in today's traffic can you really hear another car's horn when your left ear is stuffed full of mobile phone and the other is listening to the in-car entertainment at full volume?

And Rachel, I think your verbal utterings and range of vocabulary were probably more effective than any beep on the horn :o)

Except for the 1st ,,, talking on the cell phone,,, I thought the list was lame and I dont find offensive...

I tend to expect that ... And is part of my defensive driving style

What I hate are drivers that are distracted,,, aka cell phone, make up application, eating spaggity ...ect

The second thing I hate are those that dont understand the basics of driving and not taking there right of way.... not knowing how to use a 4 way stop sign, merging onto a highway, or worse having some one merging onto the highway in here area

3rd is driver disrespect / entitlement....the handycapped and elderly....they dont maintian the traffic flow, drive 15 in a 40, wont pull into the intersection for a yeilding green, comes to a complete wide long stop making a right turn into a parking lot...forcing everyone to stop behind them .... and the worst 2 of these drivers mirrioring each other taking up both lanes so no passing can occurer...which they do intentionally ... And I hate seeing the elderly/handicapped being allowed to continue to drive after they have a serious crash because they ...."FORGOT WHICH PEDDLE WAS THE GAS AND WHICH WAS THE BRAKE" .... Sorry but thats the que your to neever sit behind the wheel every agian

Last are out of control drivers....drunks and road ragers, if your angry and driving, get off the road for a break and get control of your self..and the idoits, like the bikers doing a wheelly at 100 miles per hour, or the 2 kids racing each other at high speed weaving thro heavy traffic

I guess what I hate about other drivers is unpredictability...if I cant know what your doing or why, that just upsets my apple cart becausse now ive got to guess what there going to do, I like it when we are all on the same page

Rachel,
I was actually referring to the Moffat to Penicuik road - one of the nicest driving roads to Edinburgh. 43 minutes from Carlisle to Selkirk is going some - its 56 miles! Perhaps you didn't actually mean from the town centre ;-)
Guy

:)LOL in light of the fact that my vocabulary is being queried - then I should better not admit to where exactly to where - or I might spread alarm and despondancy to those who can't drive the same way I do :P!

I love the Devil's Beeftub as a drive, but, for pure scenery and enjoyment, then along the Grey Mares Tails from Moffat to Selkirk is pretty stunning - although I think that might be the road that my parents accousted some poor Dutch midget owners to make sure they were going to Midget50 ........! Hard Knot Pass was the one that my dad and uncle used to race over in a Midget and a Mini ....
rachmacb

Ah the Moffat Valley. Bloody good fun in a Hawk at 420 Kts!
Deborah Evans

Personally I love driving the route by Buttertubs
up to the Tan Hill pub. But the sheep can be a
minor prob.
chuckc

got the makings of a rather long Midget run here people! :p

my personal fave is hartside, though the buttertubs is a good laugh as well :)
Rob Armstrong

we've friends (suprising I know) in N. Yorks and have done a few Sporting Bears tours up that way and the Cumbria border I particularly have fond memories of the tank roads

were up that way soon again but despite one couple now having a BGT what the betting the old farts bring their new Porsches out, it's so embarrasing as both used to be TVR owners and at times MG
N Atkins

Blimey - that brings back memories. If that's the tank road up to Catterick Garrison from the A684 Leyburn road, I'll agree it's fun, but there's a lot more fun to be had up that neck of the woods, unless they've changed it a lot since "I was a lad" as the saying goes.

I have fond memories of Leyburn -> Middleham -> West Tanfield -> North Stanley then into Ripon, but up the dale there's a lot to be had, and in those days Theakston's was still in wooden barrels from Masham. Only to be enjoyed once you got home of course, but it does (did :( ) top off a day's motoring in a smashing way. In those days it was in a Mini (my first car, R.I.P. :/ ) but I'd do it in the blink of an eye in my Midget if it was closer.

OSM.
OrangeSpyderMan

I've got news for you if you got to the right pubs up there you can still geat Theakstons in wooden barrels - would be a lunchtime and I was driving though otherwise I might had treid - it was OP :)

our friends have lived in several villages around there, as they are locals we've done all the roads and a lot of the best pubs over the years :)

we saw the new year in by stopping at Reeth one year
N Atkins

This is getting me totally off-topic :) but your comment tickled my curiosity and yes, it seems that Theakston Brewery has been bought back from Scottish and Newcastle and is back being brewed in Masham. That is good news. glad the roads haven't changed too much either :)
OrangeSpyderMan

remaining off topic - Threakston went back a while ago

however we having many, many, new micro-brewiers now some of which brew products equal to and even better

Yorkshire has the most micro-breweries and breweries in the country(ies)

having drank real ale for 33 years now it one of my favourite things, drinking it mainly

I even have a shelf in the Midget for a Road Atlas and current copy of the "bible" - the CAMRA Good Beer Guide

luckily the wife is even more of a fan than me but it does mean sharing driving back duties and not usually in the Midget
N Atkins

wandering further into the land of off topic...

They still make Theakstons in wooden barrels - they have one of the 3 remaining coopers in the UK there. I went on a tour (with the Physics department...), it was excellent, and the cooper bloke (who had some fingers shorter than others...) reckoned his wooden barrels lasted 5 times as long as those metal ones. was 20 quid for brewery tour, free pie and as much beer as you could drink (free!) Got to try and make a barrel (which got harder the later on the day got...) an drive the beer pumps. Would definitely recommend if they still do them :)
Rob Armstrong

My goodness - was there a subject??!!!!

I don't like beer so don't feel limitations by that - however I'm told the daytrip to Southwold is a jolly drive made better for the Adnams down there:)
rachmacb

What? There is another Spridgeter who doesn't drink beer??? I thought I was the only one.
David "dry as dust" Lieb

FWIW - both Theakston's and Black Sheep
breweries are in Masham. I prefer the Black Sheep
brewery mostly because their Roast Lamb at
lunch is superbe. The Old Peculiar and the
Riggwelter ales are both wonderful, flavorful
dark ales, and they really come from the same
family. Masham must be a lovely place to live.
chuckc

David - i'll join your ranks in the Spridgeteers Against Beer campaign.

Only girly drinks for me ;)
PeterJMoore

As I sit here this evening with my glass of Port wine I thought maybe a short clip of Tom & Ray might be appropriate.
