MG Midget and Sprite General - STRANGE writing on the underside of a bonnet
| I've just bought a replacement steel bonnet for my Frogeye here in Aus. It's not been on a car for many years but has this mysterious writing on the underside.... "This vehicle must not be run under 6,500 rpm for extended periods. (and what looks to be..) Or above 8,750 17/2/69" Would anyone have any idea why such excessive revs or know of any other such writings...? Cheers, Mark.

The driver was abducted by aliens on the 17th feb 1969. Call scully and mulder, it's one for them I think. :)

Someone had a sense of humour... maybe PO had a penchant for revs which meant the bonnet spent more time open or off than average. A

I agree with Anthony's sense of humour comment. Similar to the "PTO" painted on the underside of some competition cars. It's a nice addition though.

Its got to be a wind up of course, I just wondered if anyone knew of the history behind it... It's so outragous, someone will have seen it in the past. Mark.

You must keep it Mark. Paint around it and leave that bit on show, a bit like a panel of wattle and daub left on an old building.

Hmmm... I'm not sure how I'd do that.... The bonnet is blue, my car is red.... But I like the idea.. Mark.

That is awesome! It reminds me of what it said on the inside sleeve of the first Pretenders album (1980): "This album has a longer playing time than most average LP's, therefore to achieve maximum effect PLAY THIS ALBUM LOUD." ":oD Norm

I'm full of c@@p ideas! Ha ha

On a serious note The land of oz, is the last of the free thinking free spirt adventurers My guess would be an expermental plane... That rev range would be the optimal engine speed for a puddle jumper. Plus the 60s and 70s was the hay day of private hobbist plane builders...i personally knew 2 WWII piolets that built hobby planes in there garages when i was a child... And the VW beetle engine was the engine of choice but id think the 1275 would have been a good choice as well....with this on the bonnet im thinking a air bourne midget... Car by day, plane by night....and really its probably doable for those with a death wish for the sublime BUT... Perhaps the prophets ran out of space on the subway walls Prop

Perhaps it came from a car that was at sometime fitted with a "screamer" A Series engine!
Ray Rowsell
It could be what Ray says. I've got an old Floyd Clymer Sprite workshop manual with a lot of information on race preping the A series. It also lists a variety of available cams and there is a BMC full race cam that's good up to 8000 RPM. So, maybe....

Yes but you'd expect it to be on the dashboard not somewhere where it can't be seen.
