MG Midget and Sprite General - Strange request for info received by email

Hi all, Nice day here in Devon so I was out and about in Blackie before its too late.
Anyway,
received this email today:

Hi

Can you help me with a chassis number GAW 466387G

It is for sale here in France but is right hand drive? Was this an export model ?

I'm all for helping someone but I know zilch re numbers etc and the way it is written seems a bit....odd. Also I have no idea who David A Laughton is either.

Do you reckon this is a spam, phising, or the real thing?

I wouldnt respond back...in fact id dump the emial amd run a system scan for virus, trogan malware, ect

These idiots are getting smarter by the hour...im not saying this is a hack, but stuff like this ... I just atomaticly assume

No worrys there Prop as I have the system fitted with virus checkers etc. Just wondered if anyone one else had had something similiar

Dave - I have checked the MASC master database and we do not have any record of a David Laughton so advise caution although it could well be genuine - Unfortunately having put 'your head above the parapet' as our Devon area rep, your contact details will now be in the public domain - I find that chassis numbers are often quoted incorrectly but Terry Horler is our expert on chassis numbers

His user name is like the e-mail address you posted.

Yes David is a member of the MG Car Club and I believe he is trying to find out info about his MGB. Obviously has got a bit confused. :) no harm done. :)
