MG Midget and Sprite General - Stolen 'Blue' V5C 'Log books'
| Stolen 'Blue' V5C "Log books" see scan below of leaflet that arrived with my ne 'Red' V5C "lob book" this turned up out of the blue (pun) as I knew nothing about it the 'Blue' is being replaced with the 'Red' because:- 'following the theft of a number of blank blue V5cs. The aim is to reduce the risks to motorists of buying a stolen or cloned vehicle.' 'For tips and advice go to www.direct.gov.uk/buyerbeware ' ' . . . there is no need to contact us. We will issue a new red V5C for all vehicles by November 2012' http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/BuyingAndSellingAVehicle/RegisteringAVehicle/DG_189329 - see scan below -

Says you have to destroy the blue one. But I reckon I'll keep mine, for the history of it. Wish I had the original london issued green one, but I never got it with the car in the first place.

Lawrence, you rebel the leaflet says 'You must destroy the blue V5C now !' if you don't the DVLA come round and loosen your wheel nuts :)
Nigel Atkins
Nigel, Are you sure it isn't a scam. You do as it says, destroy your proper blue one and then later discover that the red one isn't accepted as proof of ownership - isn't that what it shouts at you in several places on it?. Somehow the new (blue) MOT certificates all look like counterfeits - look they have been printed off on a not very good home computer!
Guy
You're probably right Nigel. Just like the cencus, they come round later to see if you've complied. lol.

I got my Midget one this morning and we've previously had one for one of our Moderns. Its all genuine... http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/BuyingAndSellingAVehicle/AdviceOnBuyingAndSellingAVehicle/DG_4022402

Had my MOT done on the 22nd of December and received a really ordinary looking bit of printed out white paper which is the new certificate.

Guy, I did check before posting and did put up links, it's also been discussed last year on PH but threads I don't go to plus the 7/11 dating on the leaflet ties up I forgot to make this a live link so here it is again http://www.direct.gov.uk/buyerbeware and - http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/BuyingAndSellingAVehicle/RegisteringAVehicle/DG_189329 and the one from Dean - http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/BuyingAndSellingAVehicle/AdviceOnBuyingAndSellingAVehicle/DG_4022402

They were interviewing someone from DVLA on Radio4 a couple of weeks ago. The log books were apparently supposed to be destroyed as the printing wasn't up to standard, but they 'went missing'. About 100,000 of the IIRC. They were nicked in 2008, I think, so they're taking their time.

I got the new MOT certificate too, if I didn't know the garage pretty well I'd have been asking all sorts of questions. Mine was printed on green paper & looked very suspicious. I guess the reason is that the piece of paper doesn't mean much now as its all controlled by the database. Still, nice to have the 'proper' paper copy too! I'd also heard about the red ones, got the impression that they sent out the new ones whenever you re-taxed or SORN'd but I've not had anything for any of the 3 cars in our household. Maybe some day... -Craig

Nigel - Joke alert! Yes Gary, that sounds like what I got. I suppose that now it is all direct on-line the bit of paper that we get is just a "customer copy" so doesn't matter like the old ones which were the only evidence of passing the test. Lawrence - there was a news report just before Christmas that they are pursuing prosecutions against some (randomly selected?)census dodgers.
Guy
arhhhhhh, Guy - you got me :) 2008 blimey I'd forgotten all about that, yes not quite rapid reponse all this sub-contracting of waste and document disposal and not employing regular staff does seem to lead to mistakes and missing items didn't a load of blank passports go a while back too
Nigel Atkins
Yeah, I read that Guy. I wonder how they make the "selection" of who to follow up. I have to admit to giving a few vague and not entirely correct answers on mine. I wondered if they might be queried. I mean, where were you on the night you completed this cencus etc? Er, down the pub getting hammered? maybe? lol And mind your own business. :)
