MG Midget and Sprite General - Still Driving

What a great opportunity the mild Christmas has been for getting out in the Midget. You will remember my post earlier this year in asking for advice on how to over winter her. I am still avoiding salt but am continuing to drive her as long as I dare. However, I am thankful to Prop, Neil, Nigel, Lawrence, Onno, Rob, Rach and all who advised me not to store away. Here's wishing all a trouble free 2012. Regards Pete.

well done Pete

between 1st October (the usual sad SORNers day) and now I can't think of more than a few days (where I am at least) when it's not been reasonable weather and no salt for at least part if not all of the day

many days have been roof down days too and quite a few of those in double digit centigrade

that's the problem it's easier to remember the bad weather days than the (many) reasonable or good driving days during the late autumn, winter and early spring

I took my wife to ther pub yesterday lunchtime roof down and as we sat on the village green in the sun facing the car I thought I could have taken a photo and posted it up in the photos of summer thread

or taken a few sunny winter photos mixed in with a couple of summer ones and asked which is which

My wife and I have been out this morning in the Sprite around the lanes near Alderley Edge, Chelford and Knutsford. We did keep the top up as we're both suffering from a horrendous cold virus, but it was well worth it. It was a bit windy which made the air very clear and with the sun so low in the sky, the light was fantastic. We called into a shop in Alderley Edge and bought a couple of steak and ale pies, took them home and had them for lunch with mushy peas and crusty rolls and steaming mugs of tea. Smashin'!

Lol glad to be of service as I'm sat here almost IN the Rayburn warming up after driving the beloved MGA around with the hood down - and yes, it did rain!!!! - wishing at times I was in the warmth of the Midget!!!

Glad you're enjoying it though, and the weather, to be fair, has been more socialable this year than the past few years :)

as we've had a couple of recent winters that actually had snowfall I thought it might be of interest some actual official figures for where I am at least

so far this year, from Jan 1st 2011 until today 28th December 2011 here (NE edge of Northampton) we've only had 3 days when it has snowed but it didn't remain lying on the ground for more than a few hours at most to my memory

2010 had 28 days of sleet/snow falling and 39 days of snow lying

2009 had 19 days of sleet/snow falling and 29 days of snow lying

but the average per year between 1999-2008 was just over 10 days of sleet/snow falling and just over 7 days of snow lying

ETA: stats from Pitsford Weather Station

Nigel,
Very different for a little further north!

This time last year it snowed where I live on 3rd December and lay, without melting but with frequent top-ups through until 7 February. This winter we have had very little, only 4 days so far with snow lying, in early December. Most of the time for several weeks now, it has been just dricht! Certainly not as suitable for Spridgeteering as when it snows.

The "mild Christmas" here has been blustery and generally wet, and not very pleasant. Yesterday was heavy, cold drizzle most of the day, although it brightened in the afternoon and we even got a glimpse of sunshine for an hour or so. Dark by 3.30. By eck, its grim oop north!

Glad you are having fun!
I need new rear tyre's before my fun can continue....
Onno K

Pete,

Glad to hear you're still driving. We do much the same here all winter, clear and dry we drive if only for an hour, or so. Good for the soul.

Happy New Year to you all, and a promising 2012!

Regards,

Larry C.

Guy,
I know what it's like up your way as I friends up there, when they used to ring they say they were in a good layer of snow and I'd say how sunny it was here, one year I sent them a photo of lying snow here but it was gone by the afternoon

also got friends in N Yorks and two years running we had to postpone visits for weeks as they couldn't get out of there village for a few days let alone other getting in

good job we've also got some nice roads to use down here to take advantage of the better weather

rained here earlier but now it's sunny again, cerntainly not dricht :)

Larry,
we had an hour or so run to pub(s), hour or more there and about an hour or so back :)

Nigel,
Its one of the pleasures of the UK - the variety in so small an area! Still raining and blowing a gale here!
Guy

Guy,
when the weather is slightly better you've got great empty driving roads so you're not losing out

we've toured up there a good few times with the Bears and are back there again end of April - we've been in April when it's been cold wet and blowy and other times when it's been warm and dry, always great driving either way
