MG Midget and Sprite General - Sill Drain Holes
| I'm in the process of restoring the frog which had no drain holes in the sills and after a restoration 12 years ago only had minor rusting at each end, caused by trapped mud, etc. Reading a previous thread the advice is to put drain holes in the sills, after the experience from the previous restoration is this still the best option and if so, how big and where? | Hi Graham, I didn't post earlier because I don't have a definitive answer, but I can add to the discussion as I have drilled drain holes in my sills. When I rebuilt my '71 Sprite in the early 1990's the original sills had weep holes. These were formed by steps in the bottom flange of the outer sill so that when they were welded together it left slots (3 or 4, I think) along the bottom of the seam line. The replacement sills didn't have these steps in the flanges so after welding I drilled some 7/16" holes as close to the seam line as I could. Last year I re-stripped the car for a respray. The sills were perfect other than at the rear end where I hadn't managed to fully seal the sill closers. I had thought this would help with ventilation, but just by the muck from the rear wheel wasn't a good place for this! Guy |

| Thanks for the reply Guy, so it seems to be Hobson's Choice!! Your experience reinforces the argument for drainage and mine the opposite, I'm now officially flumoxed :+( Graham. |
