MG Midget and Sprite General - Senna
I watched Senna at the cinema last night, and I'd say for anyone with even a remote interest in F1, it's essential viewing. There was definitely a bloke crying two rows back from us. Really took me back to my teens - the Prost-Senna rivalry, Mansell & Piquet, Berger & Alesi, the way the cars looked and sounded; and the horrible crashes nearly every weekend. Even for those who are not fans, the experience of in-car footage from Monaco in Senna's car, with cinema sound and the big screen would be worth it. A Superb film. |

Thanks for the recommendation. My daughter is taking me tonight - Father's day treat. She watched the trailer and, although she is not a formula 1 fan, wants to see the film. Ray

I saw it last week and whilst senna is (only just) before my time it was absoloutly amazing! I actually left the cinema emotionally worn out! For two hours I sat, with either the hairs on my neck standing up, or holding back tears! ha ha. Brilliant film, I can't recommend it enough. Actually... thinking about it I might go see it again! Malcolm
M Le Chevalier
Thanks Mark. I read a review in the "Red Bulletin" and had decided to go and see it. This post has made sure I will make an extra effort to find out where it's showing. Bernie.

Intresting,,,,im guessing it was only on dvd last year here..,from what ive found, id love to see it, You are refering to it as a documentry correct? Not the laxitive stimulant...hahaha Prop

Have to say, i struggled to hold back tears throughout the film. A truly awesome film, and a great insight into the politics and all the stuff I had little to no interest in at the time (being that i was only 11 when he died) The Roland Ratzenberger crash had me in the foetal position. :(
PeterJMoore
I agree with all the above. I was lucky enough to go to a Q&A showing and it was brilliant.

I was working at the Snetterton with the BTCC directly after Ratzenberger - the Alfa 155's wore a black stripe on their cars as a tribute to him, it was a nice touch / tribute as Senna's death largely over shadowed his accident. I watched the San Morino GP live, you could tell that Murray Walker already knew as you could hear he was fighting back the tears, I am not sure of the details but under Italian / San Morino law it creates a lot of problems if death is pronounced at the circuit, he was pronounced dead later at hospital. I won't see the film, I have seen too many drivers who have passed away over the years

Prop - it's in the cinema but is a documentary, not a film in the usual sense... Peter, I have to agree - the crash footage was absolutely sickening, That shot of the marshalls pointing out Donnelly's crash - you could just see the horror on their faces, and then there he is lying on the track. The in-car footage at San Marino just had my heart pounding because you just know what's coming. The film's been on my mind all day, and the more I think about it, the bigger it's impact...

Can some one post a link to the site or a trailer,,, I dont think this is the same film I found, it wad released , early 2010 I cant get the link I found to copy in android |

well that sucks... whats with forgine films and the USA, are they afraid that wont live up the the status of god awful boring formula films we have to endevor to watch. another film that wont be shown on usa terroritoty well.. okay it did have one showing here in the USA back in Jan at the sundance film festival... but im not sure one showing to an audince of 50 people really counts prop

doubt it will be out in the states prop, you folks have nascar and indycar and therefore don't care for formula 1. Malcolm

I once met the man.I was in Bruge filling my car up when he drove in behind me in a Honda Legend. He could not operate his pump, so I filled his car up for him. he was off for a meal with his mechanics. he was ordinary to talk to, and seemed a genuine nice guy. The checkout guy did not even recognise him despite the double 's' tee shirt! One of the most magic moments of my life.
Shawn
Good film, I have some reservations about it for reasons I won't post here and spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet, perhaps we will discuss a bit later. Motor Sport magazine seemed to think it wouldn't be a success in the US because it doesnt have a happy ending! Build the hero up then kill him offf rather than have him win the race Tom Cruise like....
Max max-at-midgetmax-dot-com
From the trailers... It looks like a great film Considering the quality of films we have had in the past 10 years, im guessing it didnt have some 18 year old titty monster dancing across the screen, with bad dialoge and massive explosions every 90 sec, and the mother dying of cancer who overcomes it the end, and well all lauagh and ride into the sun set where the hero says ... I live my life 1/4 mile at a time, but for those 15 sec, I an idiot Just my rambling thoughts on the movies....seriously I dont undersand why holiwood cant make a profit...for some reason people just dont go to the movies like they used to....why is that Prop

I remember Jeremy Clarkson doing a review of the film at the end of the season and you could tell it would be a very impactful movie. I am going to see if I can get to watch it some how. The short clips they showed on Top Gear showed how much of a hero he was and how he was so respected among other drivers. Allan

Just been to see it and it was *very* good. Just the inspiration I needed to whet my appetite to final buckle down to Tom Rubython's 500 odd page biography of Senna which has been sat on my bedside table unopened for the last 3 years...
Mothy
A great film. It reminded me that there has been "politics" in F1 that I had forgotten about. I found the sequences showing the drivers' meeting particularly interesting. I'll stop there so as not to spoil it for anyone intending to go to see it. Not to be missed
Ray Rowsell
Good article here on how F1 is missing the oppurtunity to exploit its video library inspired by the film... http://sidepodcast.com/post/youd-think-they-dont-like-money

| I was a Mansell fan and the wife was in love with Senna. You can imagine what it was like in our house every other weekend. I have been invited to an 'Advance screening' with guest speakers and cannot wait. July 27!!! Another month. Great memories of qualifying at Adelaide in the '80s. Standing at the hairpin at the end of Brabham Straight watching the brake discs glow on Mansell, Piquet, Prost. Then Senna nothing, nothing, nothing, RED WHITE...gone. 1.5 seconds quicker than anyone else. Amazing. Also I will always remember this moment.

What a fantastic film i take my 80 year old father to see it he's an ex racer,he felt that Senna had the weight off the world on shoulders look at his eyes when he was waiting for the start, i had forgot about Rubens crash that was a shock what a bad weekend. gary
gary knowles
It was a terrible weekend. I didn't see the race as I was in the garage, rebuilding my engine. I was listening to it on the radio and when they said Senna had crashed, I just knew it was bad!
Dave O'Neill 2
If anyone in my neck of the woods is interested, it's showing tomorrow night Tuesday 21st at 8.45 pm, for one night only at Cineworld, Grand Central square Stockport. I'm going for sure. Bernie.

Is it on general release then in the UK at present?
Guy
It is Guy - even most of the big cinema chains are showing it now
rachmacb
Oh, good. Zeffs are showing it. They are also showing "Closer to the edge" which is about the TT. Looks like another goodie.
Guy
TT3D is abso brilliant - if you understand the psyche of bikers.
David Smith
Lucky you Guy - must be some advantages to being a "townie" :P!!!! The closest cinema to me showing it is about 40 miles away - so guess I'll have to wait 'til the DVD or it's out on TV :(
rachmacb
Saw 'Senna' a couple of weeks ago. Just brilliant. Interesting to read the 'struggled to hold back tears / holding back tears' comments from a couple of men here. I wept buckets at a couple of points. Why not? I laugh when I find something funny. I cry when I find something emotional or upsetting. "Real men don't cry" is just macho bollocks - and the world might be a better place if we start to tell our sons that.
Steve Clark
where do you live Rach?! nowhere in the UK is 40 miles away from anything!
M Le Chevalier
"nowhere in the UK is 40 miles away from anything!" M Le Chevalier, have you not been to Linconshire yet? ;)
Arie de Best
ha, I live in Aberdeen, now that is remote! yet still only 60 miles from the next big centre of civilisation. That is if you can call Dundee civilised! ;-) Malcolm
M Le Chevalier
LOL - I did actually say the closest one SHOWING it is 40 miles away, however, Arie is correct - and I live down a few miles in the middle of the Fens, so, even my nearest village is quite a bit away. The nearest actual cinema is a small locally run one - with double sofas and everything - real cute (I gather!), and that is about 15 miles away - sadly, as it's a local one, then, they do tend to stick to guaranteed sale films, hence, probably, no Senna ... :( Aberdeen - in comparison to here - is HUGE - and Dundee is almost a metropolis - and as for Edinburgh .......:P
rachmacb
Went last night thanks to all the good things on here and was not disappointed! I have to confess that I was not a big Senna fan at the time but as has been said before the period footage both in car and trackside was amazing and one quickly forgets the physical and mental energy needed to be competitive in those monsters of the late eighties. As a piece of film making I thought it was brilliantly done and was pleased there was no narrator. The clips and interviews told the whole story. I think what came over more than anything was the personalities and camaraderie of the drivers even when they were at each others throats. As to Senna himself it was very moving and personal without any element of sentimentality and showed him pretty much warts and all. I'd forgotten what a lovely man Balestre was! Makes Max and Bernie and even Sepp Blatter look like angels
Matt1275Bucks
Matt. you encapsulated everything I felt about the film, especially the in car footage. Very real with all the vibration that modern steadycams filter out. As you say, the physical strength required to wrestle those things round must have been tremendous. Makes one wonder what it was like in the Thirties with big Mercs and Auto Unions. Went to see it last night at the local Multiplex in Stockport. In a 200 seat Cinema there were only about 40 of us, so I guess it won't be long before it's on DVD. But the big screen and the noise experienced in the Cinema is much better than on a TV set. Bernie.
b higginson
Not so sure about warts and all, there were several pertinent episodes left out. For example, no mention of the 1991 Japanese GP press conference when Senna admitted to taking Prost out the previous year. And Balestre was rather painted as a pantomime villain, far too extreme to be real! I think the film was elegantly edited to tell the story that the author wanted. A powerful, first rate film, but to be viewed with some scepticism. I recommend it wholeheartedly but step back from the emotion for historical accuracy. I can't wait to watch it again!
Max max-at-midgetmax-dot-com
Max. I agree about the 1990 incident, I remember watching it and thinking at the time that it was pretty clumsy of Senna and on the replay observing that it was quite obviuosly deliberate. The film maker confesses to being a massive Senna fan, so I suppose it makes a good story to paint Prost and Balestre as villains of the piece. But I really enjoyed the film for what it was and it brought back some good memories and obviously sad ones. Bernie.
