er, if FJ are not covering under 21 then someone will be picking up their lost customers I know 17-19 year olds tell me they're insured with their classics so unless this is just an excuse for selling then hunt around other insurers you will have to telephone them and TALK to them not text or just accept the general conditions posted on their websites so try that and also asking on here by starting a thread on the subject and you could also start a thread on PH - http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/forum.asp?h=0&f=140&mid=39637 or advertise it for free as a member in the Classified - http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/ ETA: arrrh, Prop you're lovely
Nigel Atkins
I have spent from 11-2 today ringing round company's and none of them want anything to do with anyone under 21 :( i actually dont use the website i just ring them as i am fed up of filling in forms online just for them to say we can not quoet you because of your age! SCREW THEM! The car will be really missed :/ such a shame and the only quote was of 10 grand which i am sure as hell not going to pay haha
AJ Farrell
How far off 21 are you? Is it not worth hanging on till then. I'm 24 - and am with frank pickles... he's a nice chap who runs a brokers from Yorkshire (where I come from - so i like to support small businesses like this) He isn't really really cheap... but not mega expensive either... I pay £225 comprehensive... Give him a call and see http://www.frankpickles.co.uk/ If you can't get anywhere with insurance and you still wanna sell the car. Give me a shout my email is carter dot christian @ gmail dot com Chris
C L Carter
I assume you're ring appropriate insurers and brokers (and not mainstream insurers only) so again suggest putting up threads asking others as I know under 21s tell me they can get insurance on their classics -what their conditions are I don't know and again if you want to advertise your car for sale you'd get the widest audiance in the classified sections of this and PH websites as the people that visit these forums tend to already have their Spridgets I can let someone know of this 'advert' but it's a buyers market so you need to be realistic if you really want to sell ETA: I was typing whilst Christian posted - there you go put up atrhread on here and PH and ask for suggestions of who to try
Nigel Atkins
just checking, have you tried both Adrian Flux and CIS?
David Smith
Im only 18 I tried both cis and adrian flux adrian flux wouldnt insure me and cis wanted nearly 6 grand I really want to keep the car but i just have not came across anyone yet that will insure me i shall go to PH and post and see what i get back :) Thanks again
AJ Farrell
I have been insured by Footman James for the past few months, maybe these changes came in with the new year. Have you tried non specific insurers such as Collingwood etc?
BH Harvey
AJ, Maybe secretly you don't want to find insurance 'cos you actually want to sell the car? ;-) But if not you could try these people:http://www.aplan.co.uk/motoring They are pretty good at sorting out insurance for non-standard situations. They have local offices throughout S England, although you don't need to live within their specific area. The other advice is to accept all the restrictions that you are prepared or able to in order to cut the cost. e.g limited mileage, parked off street etc. I believe a key reduction in risk for young drivers is to agree not to drive after midnight. Maybe worth discussing with the broker.
Guy
You could try Lancaster/MGOC
Dave O'Neill2
1 Month ago is when footman and james changed :( i had a quote for 1400 and when i rang up they wanted 2600 in normal insurance :/ if i wanted to let the car go as easy as that i would not have spent nearly 3 hours on the phone today calling different insurance companies. I tried lancaster/MGOC today i phone lanchaster first then when they said they could not do nothing for me i phone MG oweners club to ask for advice or if they new of any companyies and they told me to try lancaster but i had already tried. I will try a plan now :) thanks i have tried collingwood before but i didnt ring them today so i shall try them when i get some time to call up :) Im actuallly going to finish the work on the MG before selling as i want to still have the satisfaction of putting the car back on the road before she goes. Thanks again Anthony
AJ Farrell
The reason MGOC suggested Lancaster is that they are one and the same.
Dave O'Neill2
Roache Bentley, the guy that set up MGOC always promised to do his best to see that youngsters could get insurance for their cars so as a member of his club I suggest you email him with your situation
Nigel Atkins
Classic Line Insurance does very good deals. http://www.classiclineinsurance.co.uk/
Mike Howlett
Although a little slow to respond. I went onto their website on Thursday to get a quote. It didn't give me a quote there and then, but it said someone would contact me. Nothing as yet.
Dave O'Neill2
Have you had any tickets or fender benders?? What about being put on your parents plan I have to say, even if you cant be insured, your only 18 to 24 months from being 21, i know that seems like a life tim at your age...for me the years fly by at warp speed at 47. But maybe this would be a great time to do an extensive restro... Cause in a few years that wont be the case...wife kids job mistress they all soak up time and money and will suck the life right out of you. Prop
Prop and the Blackhole Midget
If you havent spoken to Classicline you should. 01455 539 000 They have real people and always beat other quotes for me. Not sure if their website is as active as it should be but they are well worth trying on the telephone. (I must confess, I'm at the other end of the age scale but they came to my attention a few years ago promising to be the most competitive. Works for me!) Give them a try, we'd hate to see you lose out after woking to get your car alive and kicking.
Bill1
Classic Line worked for me too with my highly modified MGB V8.
Mike Howlett
Have you tried Peter Best? Mine are insured with him on classic MG policies for a very good price. Admittedly I haven't been under 21 for nearly 20 years!
Ally
"Admittedly I haven't been under 21 for nearly 20 years!" I Don't think that will help then Ally, even if you are still so young. :)
Lawrence Slater
You're right Lawrence. I just checked my policy, and you have to be 25 to take out their classic MG policy. Sorry - about as much help as a chocolate teapot...
Ally
But at least we now know that you are either just under or over 40 young years. Not many young ladies are so forthcoming. :)
Lawrence Slater
AJ, I'd have thought the insurers I'm with might want to pick up the business - http://www.peterjamesinsurance.co.uk/ as Peter James was co-founder of Footman James before he sold out and started his new company give them a ring and see - 0121 506 6040 (available 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday)
Nigel Atkins
Well good job you don't have a horse. In the news today, horse owners are reportedly suffering a 20% increase in their premiums. Luckily most of us are here are the owners of transport with more than 1 horse power, but I think at least two here might be a bit miffed. Me too actually, as that means it's going to be more expensive per hour to go for a hack with the local stables.
Lawrence Slater
How DO you decide on insuring a horse for everyday daily travel to work, shopping and home Liability Or full coverage...after all its hard to find a good horse leg in a salvage yard. Prop
Prop and the Blackhole Midget
I still haven't had a response from Classicline. I will give them another chance - I'll call them tomorrow - but only because Bill is so insistent!
Dave O'Neill2
Prop, You have to go to a pie factory, and ask for some of the meat back to make a leg. :
Lawrence Slater
Lawerance.... I think your meancing meat....lol. Dave, I wouldnt sweat it ... I dont think our young friend is comming back anytime soon... Its been awhile scence his last .posting....besides i think we all got the impression he was looking for an excuse to sell.... And face it, at that age with so much going on in life, it can be a daunting task to keep a midget serviced and running properly I wish him well Prop
Prop and the Blackhole Midget
someone has also posted - Hagerty changed underwriters about 18 months ago and no longer insure drivers under 30 - I don't know if that's right but L, Prop, that's getting closer to us :biglaugh:
Nigel Atkins
Under 30 ??? That pretty much does me in... I may have the body of an 84 year old and my drivers lic says im 47, but my maturity level is still way low That just seems anti something ... Im not sure what, but id think that should end up in court somewhere....i can understand a rentle car company not renting to anyone under 25... But insurance on old classic cars... To anyone under middle age is just wrong somehow Its not like there are many people under 30 are going to be driving a 1969 deno farrarie as a daily driver... In fact id lay odds that leople that do drive 50 year old cars are going to be much more attentive to there driving cercumstances then a 47 year old fart like myself when driving a wornout 93 toyota pick up truck There is something definatly a miss on your side of the pond Prop
Prop and the Blackhole Midget
Bugger me! I've just had my Footman James renewal in. £174! Rang Peter James as above, was offered near identical cover for £122. Rang Footman James back and lo and behold the price for staying with them came down to £142. I thought the brokers were supposed to be acting for us! It galls me but I'll probably stick with FJ as I don't need to go through the hassle of doing the agreed value forms although the £20 difference is nearly a full tank of petrol......... now in a quandary..........
Matt1275Bucks
Dou know how expensive it's getting to get longterm travel insurance if your over say 55? Amex withdrew theirs, and left me hi and dry when my policy with them expired. Luckily I found another called world nomads, that still cover oldies on longterm policies. I've often wondered when the car ins industry is going to claim the same arguments as the travel insurers do. That once over 50, your likely to have a sudden illness behind the wheel, and that requires a higher premium, or no insurance at all. --- Even if you have NO history of illness or poor current medical condition. So far so good, the older you are, the cheaper the car insurance, but for how long I wonder?
Lawrence Slater
Matt, I'm with Peter James the Agreed Valuation (below I think £15,000) is self certification with 4 four photos and a very easy form and you don't have to repeat this every year and unlimited milage cost me nothing extra, also comes with modifications covered, UK & European Breakdown cover, wife to drive, no garage, and other stuff I can't remember (All), a huge generaliastion from me - it appears the insurance has been used on vehicles and policies it wasn't intended for so the right to sell it has been withdrawn from some, this happens with policies every few years, loopholes are found, policies sold, losses made, move it on and start the cycle again
Nigel Atkins
Nigel, Thanks. Decision made. I'm going with Peter James. FJ have pissed me off too much by quoting £174 on the hope I was gullible and just renewed automatically and then immediately reduced it to £142. As you say the agreed value should be quite easy and I was going to have to submit new forms for FJ next year anyway. Matt
Matt1275Bucks
Oh no Matt, following what I've said means something is bound to go wrong I forgot to put my policy also allows me to drive other cars not belonging to me with third party cover most classic policies don't have this don't to forget to put your mods on the form to save dispute in case of the worse if you're a member of a club mention that and that you have an MG over 30 years old (yes I know butactually saying these things can prompt further discount sometimes as dates and facts can becomeblurredif your dealing with them every call, every day) in case anyone is wondering, you can put an agreed value of (say) £14,999 if you want it doesn't mean that you'll get that if it isn't a true value :)
Nigel Atkins
AJF I would re-affirm the suggestion re Peter James, but try to speak to him, himself. He is picking up a lot of FJ clients, is approachable and, I am sure, he would be sympathetic to your cause Roy Cole (not roy@gmail.co.uk, but roy@geraldineandroy.co.uk)
R Cole
Hey im sorry but i dont really have time to read all posts! I read one about peter james ? i shall give them ago on monday sorry about no response been getting my radiator sorted and brake pipes :) + plus work does not give me much free time Rang classic line and they wanted nothing to do with me before i could even explain anything about the car or my situation he rather rudely just kept interrupting me saying yes we wouldnt insure you because be dont insure under 21's i also rang 4 other places i remember one being performance direct and yet again i was just repeatedly told they will not insure under 21's :( Things are really not looking good for me right now :/
AJ Farrell
Hmmm, Do you HAVE to buy insurance in the place you live...maybe france, ireland or scottland.... Might be the way to go Prop
