MG Midget and Sprite General - SCCR gears

I have a spare gearbox, and I'm pondering putting in SCCR gears. Are they terribly noisy (I mean will they drive me bonkers when I drive down to the circuit des remparts on it)

The only real reason (leaving aside the "because I think I want to" stuff) is that I find the standard first gear really quite short.

Is this a fundamentally silly idea (I have lots of those) for a car I also use to go to the supermarket?

If first gear is too short, what is your diff ratio..?

In answer to your question, yes it will be noisy but if you are travelling a distance, top (4th) gear will be quiet.

I had a SCCR gearbox fitted into my Mk1 Lotus Cortina when I ran it on the road and even being 10 years younger than I am today (read as less sensible), I felt that the least time it was fitted to the car, the better...!

Out of all the gearboxes now being fitted to Spridgets, the std ribcage still offers the BEST ratio options...

My opinion only...

Thanks for the feedback and experience.

"I felt that the least time it was fitted to the car, the better...!"

That's kinda what I feared. Not sure about the diff (will have a look) but I think it's a 3.9 (mid 72 RWA).

Do you definitely have a Midget 'box, not Minor or A40?

The one that's on the car is, I'm pretty sure, the original one. The spare one I haven't looked at yet (it's at my family in the UK).

It might just be me.

Putting it this way. I can hear the gears whilst racing in an open car and wearing a full face helmet.

Also a tale of another Andrew of this BBS who whilst doing a track day suddenly had a mild panic attack as the pitch of his car changed dramatically. I saw him look down and look all around his car wondering what had occurred with his gearbox.... it was my car fast catching him up and holding station behind him!

Nuff said I think.

LOL - yeah, point taken :)

Thanks for the input, that'll be one less silly from me :)
