MG Midget and Sprite General - Richard Burns (NMC)

Richard Burns - 2001 World Rally Champion won the title on this day 10 years ago with his co-driver Robert Reid.

Sadly he lost his fight against brain cancer 6 years ago

Thanks for the reminder. I was fortunate enough to meet Richard at the beginning of his rally career, before he was famous, when he presented the prizes at the driving club my son attended. He was an absolute gent. He was 6 foot plus and my son was 5 foot minus so he picked him up by the shoulders and stood him on a chair before presenting the prize. Sadly the prize was unexpected so I have no photographs only the memories.
Subsequently, I had much pleasure following his career and watching him in the many reincarnations of what used to be the RAC Rally.

Hi David,

Yes U17CC, but 1991 best newcomer aged 11. I think the presentation "party" was in Milton Keynes. However, we were members for 7 years so we went to a number of presentations so I may have the venue wrong. Joining that club was one of the best decisions I made as it made me think about my driving as well as giving my son the ability to develop his skills before going onto the highway. It obviously worked as he passed his IAM test while he was still seventeen.

Amazing how time flies. I met Richard several times - he was a close friend of Simon Davison, who was part of my drinking buddy network when he still lived round here.
I never knew Richard when he was healthy. He was an inspiration, who handled his illness with great dignity. Lovely man...My last memory of him was of him sitting in the pub having a beer - he wasn't supposed to be, but he knew he didn't have long left, and was adamant that he was going to enjoy a few forbidden pleasures. I didn't dare ask what the others were...
