MG Midget and Sprite General - Really? 75 GBP to ship a Bugeye grille to the US?

I feel like I've asked this before, but in case someone here has an idea or knows or is close to AH Spares.

They want 75 GBP to ship a grille from there to me in the US. This seems like a lot to ship a light item like a Bugeye / Frogeye grille.

Am I just out of touch, are they?

I've just tried getting a quote on guestimated weight and dimensions...

That certainly seems more reasonable, they would sell more here if those were the rates.
Maybe there are some steep packaging and handling costs involved?
Rick Bastedo

Perhaps that includes customs fees also... Thats normally around 10%.. Give or take...mostly take, but ive never understood how its computed...they just tell me and i pay

Make sure you contact your credit card company before hand to see what there currancy exchange fee is.... Most are 3 to 5 %... But some can butt screw you big time ....i had a CC offer in the mail once from bank of america for 12% for currancy exchange fees

Plus you may want to touch base with the CC company and let them know your purchasing over seas... Sometimes ive heard they will wont extra approval incase the card or its identity has been stolen.

Good luck

I doubt that it would include customs fees - they would be added on when it arrives.

It may well include insurance, though.

Dave...

Good point... I know ive always gotten a bill about a week later for the customs fees ...but i wasnt sure if it ever gets charged at the other end and someimes you have to pay customs if its a pick up at the post office

Insurance is a real possiablity....esp considering how light and delicate that grill is and its comming 1/2 way around the planet in under 4 days.

Or maybe they just don't want to ship to US with the risk of damage to a delicate grille. There are some among us who have done that.

Guys
I recently tried to get a $20 - 6 foot long chrome moulding for my Elan from the UK and the freight was going to be
108 pounds (about$160US)
Not all that long ago I was able to get a complete assembled roll cage from the US for not much more than that
The price of freight out of the UK is a disaster

I've freighted racing bike wheels from the US in a box that would easily take a grille for (from memory)around $30

Rick, if you're interested in refurbishing an old original, email me. Shipping would be a lot less and the savings could go into the restoration.

That is exactly what I am looking into now.
I have an old original, and there is a re-chroming outfit that a couple mates have talked up quite a bit and I have asked that outfit how much to fix mine up.
They requested a picture which I provided and am now waiting on a quote.
