MG Midget and Sprite General - Re: bk dyson Midget Sill lettering . . .

bk dyson posted this question a month ago.

"having a new sill put on my 1500 and bought some of the trims (MIDGET name and the long trim) to put on her.

But how are they fitted? on the back are small sharp prongs..

appreciate some advice please"

I promised I would see what I could do. So here it is and I am sorry it took so long.

As I said earlier, BMH made some self adhesive templates. I first read about them in "MG Midget Reborn" by Peter Birkin. BMH no longer makes them. When I read Mr. Dysons message, I was already in the middle of trying to get a set of these templates for myself. I found a rather generous member of the MG Experience forum by the name of James "Andy" Meador (or JAM) to help me out.

The templates arrived a few days ago, and I contacted BMH for permission to share them online as a PDF. David Savage, the systems manager of BMH Ltd, agreed. So I can now add them to the collection of templates floating around on the forums.

P.S. Upon close insopection of the originals I discovered that the BMH templates had a slight error. The left side was printed about 0.083” further back than the right side. I corrected this.

I just realized that you may also have been asking how to get the letters to stay on. Hole drilling is but one part of the process. I used some weatherstrip or trim adhesive to hold them in place after the bodyshop misspelled Midget (yes it can happen it came back MIGDET) and that was 10 years ago or so. Only reason why they arent on the car right now is that I pulled them off since the sills were getting so rotten I was afraid of losing them.

However I think the factory approved way is to use some special clips. Moss USA lists these as part number 326-650 and Moss UK lists them as aprt number 326-650 and right now they are on sale!

BTW Please let me know if there were any problems in printing or using the templates so I can try and figure out a fix.

So - forgive my confusion - are you Seth the boy scout with the wrecked rust bucket or another Seth who's not 16?
rachmacb

The letters are fited by drilling the necessary holes and inserting a special plastic plug (bit like a miniture 'Rawlplug' into each hole prior to pressing in the letter.

Need to ensure well waxoyled or similar to avoid the dreaded rust !!!

Hardly a boy scout (at least officially anyway but if you mean metaphorically then yes i guess I am). I'm 30 and my Midget is quite rusty. . . I think this is the last year for this shell. Its been totalled, sideswiped, patched, had cavities filled up with triple expanding foam (at dads insistance), had stress cracks welded up and then rewelded.
