MG Midget and Sprite General - radio wire hook up ??? to avoid noise and interfer
Hey guys , Im at that point where doing the wiring work to hook up my smartphone to take the place of my old out of date car radio. "Car Radios ...Oh SO 2007", how did we ever survive those old antique days... Hahaha Anyway here is the direction in going ... im going from the smartphone with a 3.5mm headphone jack that splits into 2 RCA jacks that hooks into the big amp that goes to the speakers.. then the big fat power wire goes from the battry to the AMP and gets no juice till a small power wire turns on the amp... this small power wire has vary little power. but is the focas of my consern Orginally I was going to hook the small on /off power wire to an on/off switch to power the amp... but then some one suggested to hook this small on /off power wire up to the parking lights... which is really cool as you would have to turn on the lights to run the radio the reason for this kind of hook up is to avoid forgetting to turn the switch off when i leave the car So here are 3 ideas for hooking up this small on /off power wire 1 hook it up to the parking lights 2 hook it up to the fuel pump 3 hook it up to my gauge consel that will be powered by an oil pressure switch and a relay... no oil preasuure, no worky. but here is where im not sure... will i get any engine noise, hiss, buzz, interferance ect ect doing it one of these 3 ways or is there a better way ... should I hook in a noise filter?... i know this has always been an issue on other steroeos ive installed in cars before ... but would it happen using a smartphone as the radio So far the sound is Great running it thur the home stereo so I think it should do okay in the car... at some point in the future ill probably hook in a small amp between the smart phone and the big amp to really get some nice sound. certianly looking to your opinions and ideas as always Prop

Don't know Prop, but you may be able to tune in to the Mars Rovers!! Sorry old man, not being very helpful today am I? Personally I'd just hook it up to switched power like a regular radio. As Mr Montgomery Scott once said: "The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain."

It was beautiful here, sun out and nearly 70F. I had the top down and went for a drive. Also got some chores done, planted 6 tomatoes in those upside down hanging things and also 6 strawberry plants in one other hanger. Made up some clam chowder from scratch, and had that a little while ago. All in all a very nice day here. 8)

Prop, If tou get a top entry dist cap, for a 1275 Mini, you gan get much quieter sealed ignition wires. The right hand drive Spridgets need the side entry to clear the steering colum, but over here we don't have to cut a perfectly good set of wires. Phil

Well it turns out you do need a mini amp to power the smartphone thur the big amp ...apperantly the smartphone only pumps out aabout a watt or so... so i got nothing out the speakers just doing a.direct hook up from the phone to the big amp. So ill source a mini amp and let you guys now what happens Prop

Prop, the little wire is only controlling a relay, so there is no way for it to affect the noise. My iPhone had no trouble driving the big amp in my Bugeye, perhaps there is a gain adjustment you are overlooking? There are coils and condensers out there to cut the effect of ignition noise on the radio... OTOH it is another way to listen to both your radio AND the engine ;-) David "getting ready to pull the amp out of the Bugeye" Lieb

I understand that one is better to place it the opposite side from the coil ...... However, I like to not be able to hear my phone when I'm driving and so play the radio too loud ;)
