MG Midget and Sprite General - Prop I feel your pain!
Prop, I feel your head gasket pain! Think I have just found out the head gasket on my k-series powered Rover 25 is toast! Has happened pretty suddenly but two litres of coolant has drained out into the sump in the past week or so. Coolant in the oil, oil in the coolant. Oh bugger! What an utter kick in the balls. Oh well, at least I get my end of year bonus tomorrow, I know what I will be spending it on! Damn head gasket failure is depressing! Malcolm

Hang in there malcome It cal really take the wind out of your sail...i hope it wont be to expensive Prop

Not too expensive mate Multilayer gasket set, water pump, timing belt, tensioner, oil, filter and antifreeze for less than 125 quid and not too difficult a job, just annoying!!

I thought about doing it myself, if it was summer I would, but its too cold and wet to do it this time of year! (I will have to do it with the car on the drive). I have also fallen out with working on the car as everytime I fix something, something else breaks! Totaled up parts already, yeah, not that expensive, just a right PITA! Malcolm

Malcolm, do some research on PistoHeads as there's a way or parts to doing it so that it doesn't happen again too soon - I can't remember details I do know if anyone is stuck or doesn't want to do it themselves that there's a mobile chap tha's highly recommended and he' helped another chap to also set up and do this and other work both have travelled abroad so that would include your country :)

I have researched it to death already, just out of personal interest. I didn't actually think it would actually ever happen! Certainly not so suddenly either. Lots of things need to be correct and on the whole the engine isn't badly designed, just MGRover never took much care when building the engines. A sort of 'well if it gets through the warranty period that will do' attitude. Malcolm

just seem to remember, or more accurately not remember, a way or parts or certain HG or dowels or something - mainly with MGFs because of the semi-hidden coolent system or owners not reading and checking the Handbook :)

you have half a memory there, yes Nigel! Metal head locating dowels need to be used, they at one point used plastic ones (so that they didnt dink the head when throwing them together on the production line) but these allowed the head to shuffle. There is also an uprated gasket that the freelander used. Cylinder liner heights are also crucial (another thing MGRover didnt really bother assembling/checking properly). Cheers, Malcolm

not that good reading _ I half thought the dowel material was the other way round :(
