MG Midget and Sprite General - Problem with Wanted Ad Supplier

Just thought I'd inform everyone that having posted a wanted ad on the site for various bits for a Mk3.
Many people had got back to me and I'd obtained a couple of bits with no problem. E M Parts, based in Congleton, Cheshire, came back to me and we exchanged a few e-mails and phone calls and a sum of money. Everything seemed genuine enough. After 3 promises of sending the parts, the last just before Easter, nothing has turned up. I've never been able to raise them on the phone although the number does ring. Not sure if he’s a forum member or just browses the ads ad hoc. It sounded like he had a couple of breaking Midgets. Hopefully he’s on holiday etc but its been nearly 3 weeks since he took my money.

Just wondering if anyone else has used them before and was there experience any different.
Simon Ricketts

Do you have any contact details for them? What was the guys name?
Tarquin

Sorry I don't know but you could try looking in the Archives as reading something similar rings a bell with me (but not necessarily that name)

Say what bits you wanted as someone here may have them to sell/get rid of
Nigel Atkins

Yep, got contact address, e-mail, telephone details but no name.

There have been quite a few 'comments' about someone in that area of the UK trading (or not) in this manner.

I believe Mike Plumbstead (our Forum moderator and host) may know as he removed ads by this person from here in the past for the same unethical behaviour.

Like Nigel says, have a look through the archives...

Good luck...
Mark.

Hi Simon,
Been trying to find your email address, anyway email me as I have a mobile number you may not have,I bought some parts of them but I live quite near by to collect.

Cheers Wayne.

Thanks all for coming back. I had an e-mail today, see below,

Hi there,
Just got back from holiday, your parcel is being delivered by a company called myhermes,I will call them now to see whats happened,I only got back at lunchtime so hav'nt check yet,
I will call you or email with details once I spoke to them,i will confirm address to them as well just in case,

Thanks

If he was going to take my money he wouldn't bother with the comms. One thing though I seem to get quite a few responses from people who are clearly just suppliers, I think I was a bit naive in thinking everyone who posts and supplies is an enthusiast and hence can be trusted. At the moment the jury is out and hopefully my gear will arrive in the next few days. Anyway, watch this space. I'll let you know what happens

Thanks Wayne, my e-mail is simon@rickettsco.com

I've got a trade buyer from Congleton who is a touch elusive...wonder if linked? He's just been away on holiday and no contact. Some people are perfectly honourable but things happen and not always easy to get to comms.

Don't worry about getting contact from traders, you will often get some great deals.

MyHermes is what's called a lifestyle carrier. It's a network of people working for a company but operating from home and delivering in their car. The take about six days Bank Hols excluding, but it's all trackable and is cheap. eBay endorses them. So you are probaby ok, it's just that he carrier is doxy.

I used MyHermes to return brake calipers to Sussex Classic parts as part of the sale. Very easy to use, all on line, insurance either free or low cost and it arrived in 3 days. I would recommend them no problems. Best thing - £10 cheaper than Royal snail mail

I used them to transport a set of wheels. I didn't realise the arrangement of people using private cars. The chap turned up in a 1989 Nissan Bluebird saloon but had to leave them when he found that 4 18" wheels with 425 and 450 width tyres wouldn't fit on his back seat! He came back later with a mates van!

Thanks for the tip on MyHermes.

They're OK, but too many steps in the process, too much can go wrong, and it's not much cheaper than my regular DHL contract. The delivery time extrends during busy periods e.g. Christmas. Not bad VFM, quite cheap.

But don't start me on bl88dy DHL...TBQH all these carriers are as bad as each other, and it seems to go in phases. DHL Domesic has just been rebranded Yodel, a joke name for what is now a joke company. Time to move on, until Yodel/DHL sorts itself out and the new company does somethnig stupid!

Max max-at-midgetmax-dot-com

Max,

I agree with you about DHL, up until a few years ago they seemed great and very reliable, but more recently with DHL home I've had a series of failures to deliver, sometimes with multiple re-delivery attempts. I get quite a few things from J&L industrial and noticed they have dropped DHL and now use DPD IIRC.

I can't remember the courier service but they emailed one evening saying my item had been dispatched and that I would receive an email the following day to say when it would be delivered, next morning I got an email saying it would be delivered between 1:30 and 2:30, it was and I was impressed.

If memory serves me right, we had a dodgy dealer on the UK honda forums when I was running one of the biggest ones from Congleton, Cheshire.

He managed to con thousands out of unsuspecting people through responding to wanted ads and advertising desireably cars for breaking.

He ended up with a lot of people on his door step and a visit to the local A&E.

Perhaps he learned nothing more than stay away from Honda owners.

One of the reasons you may find Yodel worse than DHL is that DHL no longer own them. It was sold off a while back but the name only changed recently. This only affects the domestic service. DHL International is still going.

Yodel apparently is supposed to be short for your delivery.

<<Yodel apparently is supposed to be short for your delivery.>>

As opposed to DHL which is short for Drop it, Hide it, Lose it!

"Yodel"
You couldn't make it up, could you?
David Cox

Thanks all. Max, I know what you're saying and it looks like its getting there though. Latest from seller:-

hi simon,
couriers have told me they are delivering on wednesday, the bank hol must have delayede them,

please let me know once its arrived wioth you,

thanks

I'm away...LOL..it wasn't mean't to be. As for traders contacting I've had a few like this one:-

Hello,

I came across your advert on the site, I am writing you to let you
know I still have it for sale, once I know you are interested I will
send you some digital photos of the item ,plus condition and
description, and also my final price, get back to me via
claxtonmalcolm1990@gmail.com

Note serious response only.

I anticipate your swift response

Thanks.

This type of response doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.
Simon Ricketts

Simon that's not a trader that's a scammer.........keep well away!

The opposite happens when you're selling something

Dear seller I want what you have for sale. Send me your bes tprice....

Hit delete on both of them, don't let them know your real email address. Real traders/buyers will talk item specifics, and if they don't then they're not worth dealing with.

Max max-at-midgetmax-dot-com

Jeez I've had a few like that.

Heres another

Hi Simon

Thanks for writing. I have the requested original listed MK3 1972 RWA
parts in excellent shape and condition. I'm asking 350GBP as I will be
shipping via UPS on a 3 working days delivery and will accept payment
via Western Union as my paypal is dormant. What's your complete
shipping address?

Many thanks,

Ian

Luckily I saw through this one, especially the Paypal dormant, use Western Union b*ll*cks.
So, why should the ads be viewable to all and not just forum members, wouldn't it be safer to only allow people who are registered to respond. There must be loads of this going on that doesn't get reported, mainly because people feel a bit foolish when they get caught out and loose money.

Just a thought.

Rant over..

Simon Ricketts

>>So, why should the ads be viewable to all and not just forum members<<

Simon it's simply a numbers game, you want the parts the more people that know this the greater the possiblity of you getting the parts

perhaps it is possible to hide it from all but Forum members by how many people would see it

how many people do you think are on the forum, of those how many regularly or ever look at the Parts Wanted (I've just looked for the second time ever just to see your ad)

sorry, you've probably thought of all this and just wanted a rant

Nigel Atkins

Yeh, I've had HEAPS of scam emails replying to my ad, which has been up for months, and no genuine replies yet (though I am in Aus, and am looking for a hardtop - a bit big to post I suppose).
