MG Midget and Sprite General - Photo of my homemade float chamber gasket
| I figured I start a new thread for this, Im vary proud of how this turned out, its by far my best gasket Ive ever made A Big thanks to Trevor Jesse for his recommendation of the circle craft cutter made by fiskars...it was so simple and fast, this one is my 3rd attempt.. almost looks factory anyway i made the ring the width of the ID to the OD that included the screw holes, then used a hollow punch for the 3 screw holes then used a pair of small sharp scissors to cut out the excess material on the outside of the ring exposing the 3 screw holes... I know it may look stupid to be happy over this, but this little gasket is not easy to make from scratch, its so easy to tear and Ive never been able to make one this complex look so good... esp on just my 3rd attempt Thanks for looking Prop... Ouch I think I just broke my arm patting myself on the back ... LOL

Looks good to me - how much do they retail at new?
Dave Price
89 cents, but the shipping and handling is 8 dollars for 5 to 10 day delivery or 45 dollars over nighted Prop

You Go Girl I'll take 2!! Phil
Phil Burke
Thanks phil.... Ill only charge you half what VB wants for shipping ...hahaha Luckly the cutter only cost me 13 dollars Call me nuts but i just cant get over the principle of the idea that they no longer will just put a 44 cent stamp on an envolope for something like this and put it in the mail. But i guess its just business...it would cost them alot of labor to pull this item out individually find a envolope go to the post office and get a stamp then manually write out my address and do special computer entry for there bookeeping all for 2 gaskets costing 89 cents each....so i guess i cant blame them Prop

I can dig it Prop. I think it's a great thing to do. 13 dollars for a cutter? Ok, but maybe you can turn out a batch of them now, and sell them at a buck a time and get your money back.

hahahahaha you sure showed them! ($13 to save $8, and about the same number of days passed as what the shipping would have been) By the way, you do know that if you had gone to LBC, or to Robert Kirk, they would have happily put those gaskets in a little envelope and shipped cheaply. The mistake was thinking that a huge company like VB, which handles myriad cars (not just MGs, and not just British) would care about a small order, and/or taking care of the customer. Still, I am going to get myself a craft cutter from JoAnn Fabrics next time I am over by them (next to Target), because that could come in mighty handy someday. Your gasket came out great. Thanks Prop! Norm

Nice work. I made a water pump gasket recently using the old one as a pattern, and it's working just fine. I was going to do one for the thermostat housing as well, but when I bought the new 'stat at NAPA, the guy asked if I wanted a gasket to go with it, and picked one off the shelf. No shipping that way! :-) -:G:-

I didn't go buy a circle cutter to make gaskets. I raided my daughter's craft box and borrowed it when I needed to make a gasket late one evening. But I will say that it works quite well. I think every shade tree mechanic should have a drawer with gasket paper and cutting tools. Not necessarily to save money, but to save the time of having to make a special trip for the gasket you forgot or broke or lost or didn't come with the set or ...

I have a pack of gasket sheets in different thicknesses and materials I bought long long ago (on the other side of memory). I also have nice sharp exacto-knives. However, this cutter of which you speak intrigues me and I must have it!!

Thanks guys It does sound aa bit odd i know, but the shipping was a one time fee, the cutter can make many many gaskets until i loose it... And my hollow punch set only goes to 3/4 inch set Ive been making my own gaskets for a year, but ones like this never really turn out well So im glad to have this tool it really completes the tools set for gaskets making Prop

post a picture of the cutter please Prop - sounds good Dave
Dave Price
I guess a photo would be good.... But here is an even better a web page for it... im not sure why this one is more expensive... It looks the same Prop http://www2.fiskars.com/Products/Crafting/Shape-Cutting/Shape-Cutting-Tools-and-Replacement-Parts/Circle-Cutter

As another thought I have a laser cutter here at work - it should be easy enough to get measurements and cut them out. How about the cork washers on the front suspension??
Dave Price
nice gasket Prop expensive but It is a nice gasket I like that cutter nice to see it does European sizes too ;)
Bill 1
Dave that would be cool... A laser cutter. Thats the cats meow, mmmm, prehaps trevor can cut them outon his cnc machine...have you seen his custom enhansed air filter housings....NICE HEY BILL It a matter of how you rationalise the expense The 1st one was very expensive.....but once i make 100 gaskets then the gaskets get really cheap A wrench cost $15 the 1st time its used but what does it cost after a 1000 uses Owning a midget.. im sure this wont be the only time i use it Prop
Prop
Hi Prop dont get me wrong buddy I'm just glad you GOT a gasket instead of an Oring and I am just a bad as you are for tool/toy aquisition No not complaining this time I agree you will use it many more times now you have it well done :)
Bill 1
Hey bill.... I got yeah...lol. Btw.... The O ring, yeah... It was a total flop, it didnt work, it just squished out the sides when i tightened the lid down... But it was a good thought, and now i know it wont work Prop
