MG Midget and Sprite General - Out-Propping Prop - my panel conversion

See the attached pic, which I just posted on Prop's 10-gauge console thread, but which I feel deserves its own space.

It's been a hard winter, and I was itching for something to do with the Midget during the off season. Hence the conversion seen in the pic. And since Prop was kind enough to explain what all his gauges actually do, I suppose I should do the same.

Firstly, the multipurpose throttle quadrant seen in the foreground. The first four levers are cabled directly to four SUs, meaning that each cylinder can be throttled individually. Normal acceleration is achieved by shoving all four levers at once, but individual throttles mean that I can balance the four carbs from the drivers seat. No more Uni-Syn, in other words. It's really quite clever. The next lever controls spark advance; the next one inserts a new set of crankshaft thrust washers from a bespoke cartridge of six, attached to the rear crank web, ejecting the worn set into the sump; the next lever invokes all-wheel drive, and the last lever pulls a nice pint of Old Speckled Hen. An interlock on that last lever prevents such dispensing while the car is in motion. The small lever by the passenger seat is the gear stick, meaning that the passenger is required to do all the shifting.

On a related note, the left-hand control yoke steers the front wheels, and the right-hand yoke steers the rear. I have plans to start a Team Autocross event soon. I'll keep you posted.

The bank of gauges in the center are all engine gauges... note that there are eight columns; there's a column for each cylinder, along with a backup for each. Information tracked is cylinder head temp, compression, exhaust temp, and which valve is burnt this week.

The circular screens are Buick detectors - they display a blip indicating when large sedans, piloted by old people, are about to pull slowly out of side streets.

The various electrical switches allow me to turn on all of the car's lights and accessories individually if the need arises, as well as turning on the fog and landing lights.

The gyro horizons, or Spring Condition Indicators, show precisely how much lower the car is sitting on the drivers' side.

I'm just doing my little bit to inspire Prop and give him something to shoot for.

gRYF,
tHAT IS PRICELESS!!!
David "Whee's the joystick???" Lieb
David Lieb

Thanks Gryf, that is definitely inspiring. I'll have to consider adding more to my gauge cluster as well if I can ever stop laughing! You have definitely out Proped the Prop!
B Young

Tee hee, I like the Buick detectors. Over here it would be a skoda detector. Or maybe, a Micra detector.

Bit overkill for me, I wouldn't need the thrust washer insertor, can I order one without that?
Tarquin

>>> Bit overkill for me, I wouldn't need the thrust washer insertor, can I order one without that? <<<

No, sorry. That bit comes with the Self-Preservation Package. I can leave out the Tactical Parking System if you'd like.

-:G:-
Gryf Ketcherside

can I order one with an ejector seat?

Is there a lever for changing the piston dish and the compression as you drive?

Don't want one if I can't have these extras :D
Rob Armstrong

Ohno, Gryf what have you done!!
Prop will get new inspiration seing this and who knows where that will end?
LOL!!

Gryf...
AT speed what happens if you pull back on the stick?

Tactical Parking System??

oh you mean those big rubber bumpers?? yes you can keep them!
Tarquin

Gryf, What have you done???!!! Don't look Prop.

It's all fine until you accidently hit the bomb bay release - and your butt hits the pavement.....
Bryan Durham

Gryf, do I have permission to use your photo? The people who read the club car magazine need to have a good laugh.

You bet, Col... you're welcome to it.

Gryf,
You KNOW that needs to be next year's calendar!

Gez, gryf....

I didnt know what you where up to, but now I feel depressed...if not just inferior....lol....yeah all i got a 14 little gauges.

Well im off to the air plane salvage yard this week end for sure...hahaha

I love that photo.. im making that my screen saver

Good one gryf, vary good indeed.

Btw... did you make that photo....that was great work who ever did.

Prop

I think Gryf made it.. The car in question is fresh Autumn Leaf interior with Black bonnet.
Richard Reeves

Love it! I want one.
Lee Fox

Could it be developed further to have head up display's? :)

Steve
Steve H K-ser

Yes, I may as well confess. The photo is a complete fabrication. I Photoshopped a B-52 panel into my Midget. I couldn't let Prop have all the fun. Besides, it was a slow day at work.

@ David Lieb -

>>> Gryf,

David "already thinking and planning..." Lieb <<<

Great idea! You can put it on the "And Not So Stock" page or something.

Let me get back into the artwork then. I want to fettle it a bit more, fine-tune the shadows and lighting, etc. I'll send you a new, improved version shortly. As mentioned, I did that at work and cut a few corners in the interest of time.

Steve is right, there is room in the shot for a heads-up display on the windshield!
David "You mean that wasn't one of the factory options?" Lieb
David Lieb

You could do a page with just altered photos. (Maybe April.) I think we could find enough people with a bit of talent to do a few.
Trevor Jessie

Did you also replace the BL PE94J lump with a Pratt and Whitney J57?
Kim Tonry

The pic looks REALLY good as the background/screen image

Im not sure how you can make it much better... Its really a great piece of work... it even has the shadow of the steering wheel on the door and floor. But a Heads up display (HUD) on the windshield would be really cool as david lieb made mention

Gyrf... This photo is going to give you notority, Hope your prepared for all that Fame and Glory...LOL.
Prop

>>> Did you also replace the BL PE94J lump with a Pratt and Whitney J57? <<<

How did you know... ironically, the thrust washers on the second-stage compressor fan were shot, so I went back to the 1500.

But during testing, I found that heating the interior by running engine bleed air through the heater box was surprisingly effective. Before swapping out the J57, we used the Midge to roast a turkey and it was delicious.

-:G:-
Gryf Ketcherside

Just as well you did convert back to the 1500, else you would have had to cut in some heat vent holes in the front wing ... :)
Prop

Gryf.. Fantastic ------BUT I do not see an odometer or a lever to deploy the drag chute.
I do not care about the actual speed but would like to kno how far back home actually is after I pushed the levers forward followed by flames and big boom.

Sounds like a volunteer! Perhaps, in the vein of "truth is stranger than fiction", we could include a photo of that BMW-powered Midget, This Sprite:

and this 1974 Midget:

Gryf,

I thought that was for real, but hey, no self respecting spridget owner would jettison thrust washers into the sump!!!

Dave "I would believe anything" Matthews
D MATTHEWS

Well now I finally understand why Gryf always insists on being addressed as "Major Kong" when I see him in person...
Kim Tonry

David, here's another for you.
Only in Miami!!

Phil Burke

Hey phil,

vary cool, is that a MGB with bugeye front clip??..I cant place the car with that curved wrap around at the dash, windshield, and door jamb area, ... or did the bug/frog eye come finished like that? (the curved look)

That is one cool looking set up., definatly alot of time invested in carving for fit and detail...Its not nessacarily what id want, but you HAVE to respect the craftsmanship involved and give the man his cudoas and credit for job well done.

Prop
Prop

No Prop, It's a BE.
I hated it so much, I had to take the pics.

Phil Burke

I have just shown this to my wife. She has broken down in tears of laughter. What a great post. It gets my vote for the best post ever.
Thanks Gryf
D Brown

Phil,

least now we know a frogeye clip will fit a MGB...thats got to be worth something
Prop

that's not a frog eye clip on an MGB, Prop. It's a frog-eye clip on a frog-eye body with an unusually modified interior.
Chris Edwards

ME ???? what did I do ??

This debate of frog vs Bee is between chris vs phil...LOL

Prop

Gryf,

Engineering excellence of the first order!

Enzo's products pale into insignificance when coming up against the technical expertise of a Grand Master!

One assumes that on your MK II version, presumably already on the drawing board, the addition of an oil pressure guage for each "big end" would be the ultimate killer punch to keep Ferrari, McLaren,Mercedes et al in their place?

Peter
PJ HOBSON

Gryf,
Nice but have you thought what a right b***ard its going to be to get the dash out to free off your jammed wiper wheelboxes? Also I think I've spotted a design flaw. Where's the cigar lighter?
Matt1275 Bucks

Right, this is just the prototype. By the time I'm done, we're talking full "glass cockpit." Give me time... it was hard enough finding a B-52 panel at the breakers'.

Gryf "Gear Down and Welded" Ketcherside
Gryf Ketcherside

OMG!!!

I just saw a HUGE desigh flaw... this may not be do-able!

No cup holder

What a shame, and it looked so good.

Prop

That is just too funny !
I especially like the 'back-up' gauges. I know I'm not alone driving in fear that a gauge is about to quit !

Paul
Paul W 1976 1500

So is the model designation on this "MGB52"?
Kim Tonry

Gryf, You have put my 1 functioning gauge (oil pressure) to shame.
