No wonder merkins are not too popular round the world, even though Bl deserved anything that came to him.
JB Anderson

Exactly right

The world is a better place now Bin Laden has gone. The terror attacks of 911 required an answer and today saw that close up.

However the images I have seen coming out of the USA are terrible. There is no wonder that the rest of the world looks at the USA and are staggered. Whether this is a religious thing I am not sure but we need to thank the forces who have done this and then find ways of making peace with all the religious world whether they are christians muslims or whatever. The message unforunately coming out of the USA today is one of victory for jesus over Allah. Props comments I am afraid are typical.

I thank the special forces for this rightous act and know it had nothing whatsoever to do with jesus god Allah or any other mystical figure of hate!

Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo

Thanks to The Great Prophet Zarquon!!

Tip of the hat to Douglas Adams... RIP

UBL was responsible for some very bad things, a lot of us over here have shown some emotional jubilation at the news of his demise. I believe it's justified, a lot of us were touched personally by the deaths on 911 and even those who were not still suffered.

Many of us gave to the Red Cross and other organizations, gave money and blood and stuff to the victims families and the injured.

It's been a national thing and the culmination of the ten years of looking for UBL came to us last night.

Now can we get on with things, maybe look at repealing the molestation by security guys at the airports and have us a bit of a sanity check?

And get back to our little British cars?
Rick Bastedo

I'm not sure I can explain it from an american position you have to live here the past 10 years ....

I'm sure there's some religious overtones to it after all the muslims dont defend there faith from the zealots who have taking over there religion for their own power position and political views and domination of a people .... once they do they will find worldwide support and no greater than the americans after all we love freedom of religion it's 1 of the principles of this nation was founded on we just prefer the zealots didn't use the muslim faith to try to kill us through misinterpretation of there qouran

although I personally wasn't espousing a religion ...my comment was more hyperbole concerning jesus and god .... in the same vane as "oh dear lord" when something goes bad
Prop

I can explane my view

The US government and media have made Osama a symbol off all that is bad.
This has been indoctrinaded for the past 10 years.

Now you got him wel done (would be better if he was captured)

But the reactions of the Americans that are shown on TV and threads like this make me said

But the 10 years of indoctrination might be a (bad) explanation.

Yes Osama was a bad man who has done terrible things.
Yes it is a good thing that he has been killed.

But having a middel eastern style party because he is dead?!
Onno Könemann

Well, my take is:

Do we *know* it is U/OBL? How do we know? Why was his body summarily "buried at sea"? How can the troops be sure (see "friendly fire" incidents passim)?

Yes, U/OBL was/is/may have been a bad man, but how do we know? We've simply been fed a line from the top that he was public enemy No 1 - Orwell's public hate sessions come to mind.

An American 9-11 victim's mother was interviewed on the radio today, saying that no-one else would go through what she had to, and that U/OBL had received justice. Really? I thought justice was being tried in front of your peers with your crimes displayed for all to see. Even Saddam Hussein had his (albeit rigged) day in court.

I just can't see how we can preach to other nations about peace, love, justice and democracy, then rock around the world waving our tommy guns at anyone who dares to disagree with us. Sorry guys, I'm no pinko leftie, I'm somewhere to the right of the Blessed Margaret, but we can't behave like this. I've a nasty feeling it's going to blow up in (y)our faces.

I sincerely hope that nice Messrs Cameron and Cleeg were too busy inspecting their navel about domestic politics to be involved in this one. Somehow I thnik Barack Obama may have forgotten to tell them, it's out of their league.

Just my personal thoughts on a very frightening day.
Max max-at-midgetmax-dot-com

The public parties in America did have rather Orwellian hate session feel.
I to believe that everyone has the right to a fair trial no matter the circumstances.
"battery acid injeccted in his eyeballs" really?
BH Harvey

Max, I agree with every word apart from the righter than Thatcher bit. Sadly I think the world has possibly become an even more dangerous place in the last twenty four hours and sadly our American cousins are clearly no nearer appreciating exactly why they are reviled around the world. Yet again we have seen a sub judicial execution carried out in a foreign sovereign nation and whatever the wrongs of the man that is hardly going to help the USA make friends and influence people.
Al quaeda was a convenient bogeyman for Bush to use to scare the sh*t out of everyone and set the progress of civil liberties back 100 years.
Sorry prop I find your celebrations both offensive and dangerous.
Let's get back to cars!
Matt1275 Bucks

The troubling thing is that whatever the celebrations about the death of one individual, this is by no means the end of things. In fact hostilities are more than likely going to increase as a direct result. A properly and independently conducted public trial would have been by far the better political outcome with the potential of providing some answers and proper closure.
Guy

I doubt very much UBL offered to give up and go to trial.

This is one we will just have to settle on as a situation where you can not (or choose not to) understand a differing point of view and let it drop (and get back to cars).

No amount of discussion will explain to you how we felt about UBL, how we feel now that he is gone, and how we feel about others who follow the same path.

You can disagree all you like, this is encouraged as free speech is highly valued.

We remember what he did and we applaud the retribution as delivered. I didn't say justice, I'm no lawyer so I can't really say much about justice.

I can say he killed my countrymen, women and children and now he is dead. There are a lot of us who are in some way connected to those who were killed on 911, this provides a sense of closure and maybe a small bit of relief.

We believe our very existence is what al qaeda can't stand and the only thing they want from us is to die.
Rick Bastedo

Rick,

Your last line is pretty much spot on. But why do they want us to die? Could it be the "Ugly American" syndrome? The "Speak softly and carry a big stick" approach. Their hate for Americans has to have a root cause(s) somewhere in the past. Is the U.S. a threat to their way of life which seems stuck in the days of Mohamed? Is it American arrogance? Way of life?

What ever it is, it will take a long time to change things. As others have mentioned, this will not change things but probably make them worse in the near future. In that part of the world, if your great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather threw a rock at my great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather then I will throw a rock at you. This is an observation made by Heroditus 2500 years ago and it still holds true. The only difference is that they don't throw just rocks.

Added to that you have people with a great loyalty to, first and foremost, their religion, second, their family, third, their tribe and a distant fourth some nebulus thing called a nation with the religious leaders have the most power. And when an imam promises an uneducated teenage farmer 72 virgins if he dies a martyr, what do you get?

And gloating over it and watching it live as Obama did is ghoulish and macabre. Someone's death should get more respect no matter which side you're on. People take it to lightly. I've always heard that life is cheap. It may be to the killer but not to the one dying.

But that's just my opinion.
Martin Washington

Some who point to the US celebration of this event as ignorant, and without a doubt their is truth to this on a basic human level. But, did they feel the same during the Arab/Islamic reaction/celebration around the world after 911?

http://bostonreview.net/BR29.5/alazm.php

I doubt any of us will live long enough to see an end to this, though I pray that we do. Because on each end of the rifle, we're the same.

Well, all they did was cut a head off of the Hydra as there's lots of snakes left out there to take his place.

I heard they tossed the body into the ocean? What a waste. What should have been done was get his miserable remains to the USA, stuff his butt and stick him in the Smithsonian museum You could charge people a $1.50 just to see him. (Apologies to Joanie Mitchell for deviating from her lyrics.)

Either way, at least he will pay for his sins in a much higher court but what snake will the world have to deal with next? Apologies to real slithering snakes as well.

it's interesting to see the Brits complaining about the Americans celebrating the death of Bin Laden, saying it's wrong to act in that way over the death of a man..... but if you want to see Brits celebrating by waving placards, banners, flags, screaming obscenities & shouting death threats to the "enemy" go to a football match on a Saturday afternoon... they even send parcel bombs in an attempt to kill the opposing team managers!!!!
Flyster

I have to admit... i find the under tones interesting.. and seem to repeat other discussions of the past aka gun control.

For the life of me i cant understand the uk point of view im sure the same way you cant understand ours... your thoughts are so foirengn to me.

Ive been hoping other americans would chime in... but to no avial.

Im courious, are the thoughts being expressed common to all brits or are they personal to the individual person.... is it cultral or are they individual.

Here the emotions do appear to be cultral/universal that share my views...infact lots of resentment that he was flushed down the tolit and out to sea.... we wanted him stuffed without his head ... infact a news poll taken on the big eddy show had 68% of the voters want to see the death photos

If this is cultral ... is this because of the excessive 24/7 government cradle to grave a gov program and help for everything...giving you a scence of dependancy and passiviness in the uk

Vs

The usa that has alot of gov but nothing like across the pond...making us more independant, self reliant, and there for more aggressive due to our competitive enviorment.

This is the only idea i can come up with as to why we are on polar oppistes On this issue.

Actually, this whole thing is more boring than the royal wedding - and as for cultural differences - yes, there are loads and they do come down to guns and media and excessive displays of emotion!

Also, we've had terrorism for years (including that funded by the Americans), so probably less easily shocked.

There is also the concern of what will happen now - especially as an unarmed man was shot and there was no Court justice under the Geneva Convention.

There are not as many conspiracy theories either!!!!!!

However - I blame the weather and the extremes you get and how that seems to breed extreme attitudes!!:)

Now - Sod off with politics and get back to cars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Prop, how would you feel if the Brits sent in the SAS into your home town without any notice to your government, shot their way through a wealthy guy's house, killing several members of his family and staff in the process, blew his head off, then removed his body and disappeared back into the night, all because he raised funds through Noraid to fund the IRA terrorism campaign in the UK. Would you think "great stuff, the Brits have got their revenge at last!" No, I didn't think so.
As for battery acid in the eyes. Please don't go there. I spent an hour in casualty last weekend having my eyeballs waterboarded to neutralise the H2SO4 I carelessly squirted into my eyes when trying to reseat my battery chamber covers. Please guys wear safety specs when playing with batteries! I was lucky but I wont make the same mistake twice!

You cant say "i accept your appology " when the guy just stole your car and is now threating to kill your family for getting caught cause you called 911.... and never said he was.sorry for the crime

For forgiveness to work the guy needs to show remorse for stealing your car and ask for forgiviness

Osama had 10 years to ask for forgiviness ... my guess .... hes only sorry he got caught..... a bullet to the eyeball will do that....lol

Anyway ... this is one of those threads that will neverr understand each other and ive grown bored with it.

Interesting from the Dalai Lama...

"The Dalai Lama — the face of Tibetan Buddhism and a religious leader known for espousing compassion and peace—said the U.S. move to kill Osama bin Laden may have been necessary.

His Holiness answered a question about bin Laden’s death while speaking at the University of Southern California, the L.A. Times reported.

As the leader of Tibetan Buddhism, the 14th Dalai Lama says he practices compassion to such an extent that he tries to avoid swatting mosquitoes “when my mood is good and there is no danger of malaria,” sometimes watching with interest as they swell with his blood.

Yet, in an appearance Tuesday at USC, he appeared to suggest that the United States was justified in killing Osama bin Laden.

As a human being, Bin Laden may have deserved compassion and even forgiveness, the Dalai Lama said in answer to a question about the assassination of the Al Qaeda leader. But, he said, “Forgiveness doesn’t mean forget what happened. … If something is serious and it is necessary to take counter-measures, you have to take counter-measures.”

Across the Buddhist blogosphere, practitioners have offered their perspectives, many struck by how the idea of revenge, especially violent revenge, doesn’t really fit with their beliefs at all.

“In the eyes of most people around the world, Osama Bin Laden ranks right down there with the worst of the worst in history. Besides the fact that Bin Laden was a human, just like you and I – something too many of us forget when it comes to people who commit terrible crimes – there’s not much to say in his defense,” wrote one Zen blogger. “It’s really hard, even for this Buddhist writing these lines and who is committed to the Bodhisattva vows, to feel much compassion for the man.”"
Rick Bastedo

Why do you believe us Brits and Europeans, actually the whole world do not understand murder? of course we do and we also know the crime of killing thousands in the twin towers ranks as an atrocity similar to those given to us by the Catholics in Ireland.

What the difference is is that we understand why these things happen and try to solve the problem, solving the problem is NOT going into foreign countries with all guns blazing, killing anyone who may be around innocently and then celebraing by chanting USA USA USA

This kind of behaviour is exactly the same as that found in the Middle east by those people you label terrorists? seems they are similar.

Here was a scum of the earth human ho murdered thousands all because he believed his god was better than you god. Think I get the feeling atitudes exist that are very similar.

what the world needs to do is find an answer to the problems we created when Israel was given Palastinian land. If that can be sorted then these religious nutters like Osama and some others in the power in the USA would find it difficult to find sypathisors and hopefully we could all enjoy life!

What we find typical about the actions by the USA is that you believe guns and weapons are the answer, of course they are not! and in the past you used arms and osama made you pay a heavy price, you have now killed him but you haven't solved the problem. The irony that you just do not get is that even though you are a so called super power a man with a small group of followers caused such damage to you structure and people. My gun is bigger than your just does not cut it !

When you say: "find an answer to the problems we created when Israel was given Palastinian land"

You do mean that you accept responsibility for this right? By saying "we" you are not meaning the whole world right?

Also related to that is the questions of how the palestinian "people" came to occupy that land in the first place, you have studied history right?

Do you pretend to understand who the "rightful" owner of that property is?

Did it piss off a bunch of people nearly 60 years ago when YOU divided up palestine? Of course it did.
Was there intense fighting for many centuries over that piece of real estate already? Of course there was.
Is one act responsible for everything? Maybe but I think we would have to go all the way back to Abraham for that one.

Geez this thing is getting stupid. Taking actions of a few and plastering everyone with your dim understanding of it when all the information isn't even out there is just a bit short sighted. Lots of people will cheer when a bad man goes down. That's how it is, don't like it then change the channel. It's doubtful any of us knows much at all about how things really went, so this conversation is silly on that side.

Who is this mythical character you refer to as Abraham?
And yes I said WE and I meant WE. My history is VERY good! and is researched and not drip fed fairy stories.
Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo

Well, I guess I had better throw my 2 cents worth in on this subject as personally I think it's getting out of hand. The things we are saying to each other on here.

In the Bible, which I will bet bin Laden never read, a group of people were going to stone a woman to death. Jesus stepped up and more or less said that the one among you with no sin can cast the first stone. No one did because none were without sin.

Same thing here. We, collectively meaning our races, countries, religions and ourselves are all guilty of something that has angered others. Maybe not on here but in our daily lives at one time or another. Maybe you accidently cut someone off one day.

Someone who has violated just about every rule of human decency and whose heart was filled with such hatred that they could carry their hatred has been eliminated from our midst. Is it a time of sadness? For most of the decent folk in the world, no.

Should he have been tortured without mercy? No. That only brings us down to the level of those like Bin Laden.

Should the US have gone after him? Yes. He needed to be brought to human justice one way or another. By his demented actions he ceased to be allowed to live among us. Ideally, he should have been captured alive and stood trial in an international court of justice for his crimes but we know he would not permit the disgrace in his eyes of being captured alive.

We, again collectively, have all believed we were right when we imposed our wills on others. Europeans crossed the Atlantic and eventually imposed their will on those who already lived there. Because they probably were considered as savages by our ancestors their opinions didn't count. All our countries have all done things wrong. We, ourselves, must look to the past if we are to learn about our futures. While we can't change the past, we can change the future.

If you believe in a Supreme Being, let them take care of Bin Laden. As a human being, our troubled world will be more or less the same after his demise, but just for a little while, it was a safer one in which to live. Shame we cannot live with our brothers in peace as human beings because this is the only place we can all call home. There's nowhere else to go.

Well, that's my 2 cents worth. I'm not looking for a debate but maybe we should all take a breather from discussing this evil person and get back to being friends, apologize if it's felt necessary and not hold any grudges against each other.

Clive Reddin

Thanks Clive,

as all humans the British and American special services make many mistakes and in the confusion of a real operation unplanned things happen

to help protect and promote the special services and to give good propaganda to worry its enemies the information released about these operations isn’t always complete and accurate

years after the events you sometimes here from the participants how, understandably, confused the actions can get at the time and how mistakes and accidents can happen

real life is seldom exactly as the media reports it or portraits it in films and on tv (or how recruiters may have us believe from whatever organisation)

I was not going to get involved with this thread because it was always going to produce vastly differing views. I'm also not going to comment on the rights and wrongs of killing Bin Laden.
What does sadden me though is some of the venom and vitriol that has been poured upon each other by members of a forum which is supposed to be a pleasurable meeting of minds relating to a shared passion of building, restoring, working on and showing each other pictures of Midgets and Sprites.
I'm sure that if Prop wouldn't have started it, someone else would have, and now that all these bitter bitter words have been said, I wonder if this wonderful BBS can ever be the same. I'm very sad today. I just hope that we can get on with what this forum is for.

Bernie - part of the reason why I only tend to browse these days rather than contribute; its all got a bit too personal and there are people who are itching at any opportunity to throw mud.

Shame, having been kicking around these parts for about 13-14 years that the last couple seems to have witnessed the removal of some of the spirit.

I echo your thoughts Toby.

I agree your sentiments Toby.
But I also think the style has changed because you and some other very valued contributors have backed off and its gone out of balance.
