MG Midget and Sprite General - One last oil cooler question

All right, the oil cooler is finally installed, after re running the hoses severl differant directions this weekend

But.....

I still may not be out of the woods yet

Im wondering how HOT the stainless steel hoses get, ive got my head light wiring loom zip tied to it, and a plastic radiator overflow jug riding agiant them. Its nylon/plastic tank,,,generic aftermarket, for my custom aluminum water radiaor

So what are the odds the plastic/nylon overflow tank and head light wiring loom will melt

God I really hope not, cause im so tired of messing with it

Thanks guys

Prop, I don't know the exact temperature they run but I do know engine oil gets damned hot! Figure at least close to the engine running temperature anyways.

So, why would you have anything that can even possibly melt because of high temperatures attached or resting on said hot item?

I'd move or relocate them if at all possible just to be safe.

Mmmm,

I was afraid of that....im just running out of room in the engine bay, and the out doors heat is killing me to work on it.

Well,

Back to the drawing board.....thanks clive

What were your alleged oil temps on the aborted trip? Well, there you go!

The water reservoir must be good for boiling water plus a bit. Wiring harness might not like the hot side hose for long periods, depends on the length/area of contact. 105C is a pretty standard top operational rating for wire insulation, but I'm not at all certain that most auto wire is that good, think 88C may be more like it. Some kind of spacers to create a small air gap should fix it.

Have you considered heat proof sleeving?

Thanks guys,

Ive thought about it over nite , and think ive got a new solution, thats fairly easy and wont involve a complete tear out (agian),

I think I can install the over flow bottle in side the fender and splice in an extra length of wire into the head light wiring harness....and I think I should be golden .

Prop, your oil cooler lines shouldn't get any hotter than the engine oil. Around 230F is usually tops for a car with a cooler. Think about it, if the lines actually were picking up any heat from outside the oil inside would act to cool it down and if the heat is coming from inside then it can't get any hotter than the oil. Most plastic items designed for use under the bonnet of a car are usually good to around 300F or higher. Don't worry about something like an overflow bottle touching the oil line except for what abrasion might take place if they vibrate against each other.

Well Bill,

That sounds reasonable also....maybe ill just run it for awhile and see what happens
