MG Midget and Sprite General - (NMC) Oil and crud in my intake manifold...22Re
Hey Guys This is for my 93 toyota work truck with a basic EFI system 4 clyinder called a (22RE)...Not the midget. Special NOTE....Im sure there is a fancy word for (air collection box) but I dont know the proper term (sorry) The system goes ....air filter, air meter, air tube, throttle body, (air collection box), intake manifold, cly. head (air collection box) "Defination".....is a long tube shaped box that has lots of vacume lines connected and the place where the exhuast to be re-burnt comes into and also has a cold weather raw fuel dump. Ive just found tonight that the intake manifold and (air collection box) is filled with oily crud about 3/8-1/2 inch thick and it starts just past the butterfly on the backside of the throttle body and goes thur the (air collection box) to the intake ports of the head. SOOooooo.......... How did it get there? why so much? is it a problem? Should I be worried? Maybe its been there along time, and I just never knew it. Im not sure ive ever cleaned this out scence Ive owned it..1995, but I have transfered the system from one engine to the next. during engine replacements Im not burning any oil, its not comming in thur the air filter, and I capped off the EGR valve system at the exhaust manifold several years ago... (unless the exhaust is coming in thur some other way via the internals of the clyinder head ) so it shouldnt be returning any exhaust gas back into the system to be re-burned. Well it should almost be like a new truck tomarrow, another full day of clean and assembly and I should be driving her agian...I replaced the head gasket (always fun), new timing chain with all the timing guts, gaskets and seals, a freshen up grind on the valves and a new oil pump...thank god the head checked out with fying colors NO cracks (pressure and magnaflux)...thats a 1st. so just a blown head gasket. Thanks guys ... any experiance or info on the oily crud inside the (air collection box) and the intake manifold is appericated Prop...you should buy stock in "Gunk" Ive been buying carb cleaner like water from the hoover dam

Hi Prop Crud building up in the plenum is fairly common, it usually comes from the engine breather and just builds up and up with mileage. I don't know what happens in the USA but at the joint I work at with Subaru and Fords, Both of these manufacturers have pressurepacks of upper engine cleaner that you squirt in every couple of services (every service on WRX's) to clean the crud out and it also cleans carbon out of the combustion chambers. The Subaru one seems to work the best - Willy It will be smokey and DON'T breath it in, Do it out in the open with the wind blowing away from you if you are going to do it-

Thanks willy Apeartly there is an intrnal head port that the exhaust goes thur to re-enter the "plenum" (I knew there was a fancy word for air collection box) lol Luckly I got about 90% of the junk out of the plenum, hopefully in the next several week I can make a cap off plate and stop that non sence. We do have a service in the states like you decribe...But ive never used it, It always looked suspect to me...I guess not. Anyway hopefully Ill get the truck up and running today...unfortantly im captivated by the news of the day and burned out on wrench work...so will see, LOL Prop...Doing my part to kill the enviorment, one gal. of gas at a time.
