MG Midget and Sprite General - New midget owner, Hopefull
Hi All, My name Is Will Armston-Sheret and I am really keen to get an MG midget, I narrowly avoided buying a 1972 RWA model at beaulieu yesterday ( it needed an engine rebuild but was solid ) for £2500. Was that a good price to pay ? I am pretty new too MG midgets but not too classic cars, I am currently in the middle of restoring a Morris Minor. If anyone has a Tax exempt midget at about that price please let me know. Cheers, Will

Hi Will Welcome To judge if it was a good price depends on a lot and is hard to judge by this info. But you where on the right track! Buy one with a good body as the mechanicals are cheap to fix. For 2500 i would expect a chrome bumper car to have chalenges and a rubber bumper car to be in usable good conditon. But as it is fall you might get lucky certainly after this bad summer. Do not be tempted to buy a RB car and convert it to CB because you will spend the difference in price maybe even more on the conversion

Welcome will Yepp ... Rust is expensive, while pistons and camshafts are cheap....well not really but compared to rusted out a pillers, rocker panals, and rear spring shackels they are. Good luck on your search.... Id wait till the snow started falling to buy... Not to many people buy convertiables in winter...aka supply and demand Prop

Thanks all for the welcome and advice. I might have to give the chap a call and see if he's still got the midget. How much would I expect to pay for an engine in good nick ? Cheers, Will

A GOOD engine rebuild can cost about £1000, which would have made the car you missed a good price - especially if the bodywork was good. A new engine upwards of £1200. It all depends on the amount of work you can do yourself and what you want to do with your car. Before belting headlong into your purchase, do sit down and consider what direction you want to go afterwards and what you want to do. This will mean you can buy something that will suit you and prevent you making a decision you will regret later. When you do get one, then drive it at least a year before doing many modifications as you need to know what you are working with! Good luck with your purchase and welcome to the forum :)

Hi Will if the midget was as poor and as overpriced as the MGA's I saw for sale at beaulieu then I would say you had a lucky escape Gordon

Thanks all, it was a really solid car but annoyingly I didn't take the mans number down. Its has given me a good idea of what a midget should look and feel like underneath though. Thanks Dave I will give you a call. Will
