MG Midget and Sprite General - Mr. Brown delivered Props oil cooler today
It feels a little like christmas, if you dont look at the bank temp sign that says 103 degrees F. My oil cooler arrived today....pretty, no instructions, so I got a couple questions 1st ...is there a left or right / forward backwards / in vs out port direction on the oil cooler....i dont see any markings, im assuming I can drop it in any direction 2 I did purchase a mounting bracket...is there a special location in front of the rad to bolt it down 3. Do I need to coat the threads in ptef tape....(plummers tape), 4. It didnt come with the copper washers that go between the bango bolt and the block...do I need to order those 1st or can I just reuse the ones I have, ive hammered them out before...or do I need thhe copper shim washer 5..... 1st start up, do I just fill the oil cooler up with oil and the hoses then pull the coil wire and spin the engine for a few minutes, to get the oil circulated, before starting. 6. The cooler is just galvinazed sheetmetal...i dont think its an actual mocal....the galvanizing looks a bit thin, is painting this a good idea to avoid rust .im hoping to start mounting tomarroow morning brfore work Thanks guys Prop

Prop, 1. There is no in/out Plumb it however works best. 2. Not sure where the mounting bracket would fit on your car, but probably to existing mounting points already there. 3. If the fittings are AN (flare) you should not have to use tape. It won't hurt anything if you do. 4. The copper washers can be reused to a point but you may be able to find some locally at a parts or hardware store. It's not an uncommon part. 5. For start up, put about 1/2 quart extra in and start it. Then check the oil level after it has run a few minutes. You can fill the cooler but you'll probably end up spilling about as much as you get in. 6. DON'T paint it. The cooler is meant to transfer heat away from the oil! Paint will act as an insulator...kind of like rhino liner in an engine compartment! Good luck and I hope it works out for you.

Son of a F***ing bi*ch !!!! Yeah know what, for like, I dont know, maybe 3 minutes and 17 secounds, .... I really thought this might be easy....seriously what the hell was I thinking, im the great prop of couarse crap like this never goes my way. The hose going to the banjo bolt location is about 1.5 feet to long, the hose going to the filter housing is about 2 foot to long...granted im only eye balling it, but im not off by much The bracket that the cooler mounts to is to long by about 3/8 to 1/2 inch, and bows up really bad when forced I rechecked the part numbers they are all correct....so it appears im not going to worry about not having anything to do over the next 2 months , wow...thank you god, I didnt want to be bored with nothing to do. So now that im saddled with this new chore of figuring out how to make this flying Sh*t to fit....AAAAUUUGGGGGHHHHH God ....why the freak me,,,im taking a shower and going to bed, this freaken CRAP sucks GEZZUSE Prop,,,, IM SO ticked, I could bite the wings of a buffalo in one chump

Prop, Do yourself a favor. Return it and get a proper one. The holes were in my '72, and the hoses were a little trickey to figure out routing, but worked well. Mine is from a '73 factory installed option I found. I've since had quality rubber hoses made. There is a bracket that mounts to the right inside fender and both hoses are connected with a piece of rubber strap. 2 staps are seen far left in the link HTH Phil http://mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=52051

I'm with Phil send it back and it should say MOCAL on it so don't let them charge you for that and give another one! Also it should come with instructions so make sure they include them next time!

I wonder if they have supplied an MGB one?
Guy
MGB oil cooler - well, certainly the chrome bumper version - bolts directly to the front apron, no bracket required.

I was thinking of the longer hoses. But then, at 2 feet longer that would be too much even for an MGB. Well that's almost a rear engined car!
Guy
Some work to do there Dave Is that… IT? Prop, go for the one in the link, shiney braided pipes too! Bad luck :(

Im thinking its mis packaged also and was thinking MGB Ill definatly put a tape measure to the hoses in the morning, the longest hose looks to be over 4 feet long, the shorter hose is about 3.5 feet, just a hair shorter. Im not writeing this kit off just yet, I think it might actually work to my advantage as I maybe able to up along the inner fender and punch it out the fenders ...close to its connections so not exposing the hose to much engine bay Sorry about the heated angry freak out, luckly having to fix the air conditioner the past few hours have made me a little more settled in my emotions....always some thing isnt it Thanks guys Prop

Pic of mine. Factory installation in Aus. Don't know if hoses are orginal but are 45" and 42" long.

Sorry posted in another Propism thread.. 1.2 meters is not that long I think. from the connection on the aft of the engine to the inner fender, then forward through the hole and then to the other side under the slam panel. Wait, I'll measure mine....

And, Yep, my longest hose is over 1.3 m (4.3 ft) long, so you might even be short! I do have a thermovalve fitted.
Alex G Matla
you can fit the oil cooler either way round to suit the length of hoses you have.
David Smith
Okay....ive got hose deminsions The long hose is exactly 5.0 feet long The short hose is 46 inches long...2 inches shorter the 4 feet, ive played a few minutes running hose in differant paths, so its looking more and more like I can find ways to use the extra hosing On the bracket, I think ill keep it and just rebend it to fit an redrill 2 holes to mount Can several of you guys, post a pic of how you have your hoses routed thur the engine bay....thanks I think with A little extra planning when I do the thermo stat this fall, I can chunk out alot of the big hose, and run the short hose to the back of the block in place of the long hose, and come out in great shape, with lots of extra hose left over as back up spare Thanks guys....i hope im not under rhinking this Rach...kiss kiss Prop

| Here's one... The rear hose (supply) goes to the far end of the cooler and is like 4.5 feet long (it used to be longer, but the mocal valve is very hard to remove, had to cut the hose)

i found the mounting bracket was a tight fit for me too. not 1/2" too long, but it was a bit of a squeeze. It had a "British Motor Heritage Approved" sticker on it, so i didn't figure it woudl get any better. once i had it in place, it worked fine. don't tighten up any of the bolts (the bolts from the cooler to the bracket or bracket to body) until they are all in place. I didn't use teflon tape on my hose connections and i haven't had a leak yet. the hoses should have some extra length to make sure you can route them along the side of the inner fender and not risk contact with the alternator or cooling fans, distributor, etc. i would test fit with the hoses at the lengths they are, you may need more length than you think for safety. fit the cooler, start the engine and run it for a few minutes to fill the cooler, then turn it off and top up the oil in the engine.

Thanks guys I appericate that....hopefully I can play with it later today Prop

Prop, I suggest using some type of anti sieze on the actual threads of the oil cooler, but nothing on the tapered seat areas. These are notorious for having the fittings sieze on the aluminum threads and stripping them if and when you ever have to remove them. When tightening or loosening the fitting on the cooler always use a backing wrench on the cooler fittings. You may have to grind a wrench down to make it thin enough but it can save you from turning the fitting right out of the cooler.
B Young
Great point bill Im guessing just reg ol spark plug anti siezure...will do the trick Thanks
Prop
Oh lord Prop, fit the hoses, close the bonnet (hood) and drive the bugger!
